Episode 382 - The Podcast Editing and Support Show - Hiring Podcast Support Based on Fit
While technical proficiency is essential, it's not the sole determining factor. A podcast producer should possess a combination of technical skills, creative mindset, and strong communication abilities1. However, these skills must be balanced with their ability to integrate well with your existing team and work culture.
Look for team members whose values and work ethic align with your podcast's mission and style. This alignment ensures that everyone is working towards the same goals and can collaborate effectively
Consider how potential team members interact during the interview process. Are they good listeners? Do they show respect for others' ideas? These traits are crucial for maintaining a positive and productive work environment, especially in the collaborative nature of podcast production
Incorporate hands-on assessments into your hiring process. For example, have candidates edit a short audio clip or propose ideas for episode topics. This approach not only evaluates their technical skills but also gives insight into their creative process and how they handle feedback
Use behavioral interview questions to understand how candidates handle pressure, collaborate with others, and respond to feedback. These insights are crucial for determining how they might perform in your team's specific environment
Consider implementing trial periods or project-based assignments before making a full-time commitment. This allows you to assess how well the candidate integrates with your team and workflow
Set clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations for each team member. This clarity helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone knows their part in the podcast production process
Create an environment that encourages open communication and idea-sharing. This collaborative culture can lead to innovative content and a more enjoyable work experience for all team members
Regularly check in with your team members to ensure they're feeling fulfilled in their roles and to address any concerns promptly.
This ongoing communication helps maintain a positive team dynamic and allows for adjustments as needed.
In conclusion, while technical skills are important, the right fit in terms of personality, work style, and team dynamics can be the key to long-term success in podcast production. By prioritizing fit alongside competence, you can build a harmonious and effective podcast team that will help your show thrive.

Episode 377 - How To Measure My Podcast - Are You Reviewing the Right Things in Your Podcast
Many podcasters ask the same question after publishing a few episodes: How do I know if my podcast is actually succeeding? While it's tempting to focus on a single number, success in podcasting is much more nuanced. In this episode, we'll explore the most valuable metrics every podcaster should be tracking and, more importantly, how to use those numbers to make better decisions that strengthen your show over time.
We begin with the metric nearly every podcaster watches first: downloads. Downloads provide a useful snapshot of how many people are choosing to listen to your episodes and can help you identify trends over time. Rather than obsessing over individual episode performance, look for consistent growth and compare your results against realistic benchmarks. If your hosting platform offers industry comparisons, use them as a point of reference, not as a measure of your worth. Every podcast serves a different audience, and meaningful progress is often more important than impressive numbers.
Next, we look at ratings and reviews. These are more than social proof. They are direct feedback from listeners who cared enough to tell you what they think. Positive reviews highlight what you're doing well, while constructive comments can reveal opportunities to improve your content, delivery, or listener experience. Encouraging listeners to leave honest reviews also helps build credibility for potential new subscribers discovering your show.
Another powerful indicator of success is audience engagement. When listeners send emails, reply to newsletters, comment on social media, or reach out with questions and stories, they are demonstrating that your podcast has created a genuine connection. Those conversations often provide your best ideas for future episodes while reminding you that your podcast is making a real impact, even if your audience is still growing.
As your podcast matures, you may decide to measure success through monetization. Financial support from listeners, sponsorships, affiliate partnerships, or premium content can become important milestones if generating income is one of your goals. However, monetization should be viewed as the result of consistently delivering value rather than the starting point. Building trust, serving your audience well, and publishing consistently create the foundation that makes revenue opportunities possible.
It's also worth considering a few additional measures that many podcasters overlook. Listener retention tells you whether people are staying engaged throughout an episode. Publishing consistency builds audience trust and strengthens your production habits. Invitations to appear as a guest on other podcasts, speaking opportunities, collaborations, and referrals from existing listeners all indicate that your reputation within the podcasting community is growing. Sometimes the opportunities your podcast creates become a stronger measure of success than the analytics themselves.
The most important takeaway is that success is personal. Your goals may be to educate, entertain, grow a business, build a community, or simply enjoy creating content around a topic you love. The metrics you choose should reflect those goals instead of someone else's definition of achievement.
By regularly reviewing your downloads, audience engagement, listener feedback, consistency, and long-term opportunities, you'll gain a much clearer picture of how your podcast is performing. Instead of chasing vanity metrics, focus on the indicators that help you create a better experience for your listeners. When your audience continues to return, engage with your content, and recommend your show to others, you're building a podcast that is improving with every episode.___
