The Human Exception

In this two-part episode our hosts, Cayla, Nathan and Halli take a look at two topics of intrigue:

• Public Access TV - A History: The history of public access television in the US can be traced as far back as the mid-1800s; this is, of course, before the invention of anything remotely close to the television
• Polyandry:  For the grand majority of the western modern world, monogamy is considered the norm. There are small (often illegal) groups that practice polygyny, the practice of one man having access/commitments to multiple women. But less common and far less frequently heard of are cultures that practice polyandry, where a woman has multiple male partners

In this two-part episode our hosts, Cayla, Nathan, Courtney and Halli take a look at two topics of intrigue:

• The Vampire Panic of New England: The cause behind the vampire panic of New England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries could be boiled down to one word: tuberculosis
• Whitey the Talking Cat: In 1963 during a storm the Deems' came across a sopping wet white kitten in a field near their home. They took him in and would come to find out he was a very special cat, a talking cat to be precise

In this two-part episode our hosts, Cayla, Nathan and Halli take a look at three topics of intrigue:

• Christie Pits Park: Christie Pit park was the place of a notorious riot within the city of Toronto. During the start of Hitler's time in office in Germany groups of supporters cropped up across North America. In August of 1933, a group of young nazi's incited a riot at a ballpark, pulling in close to 10,000 people into the fray. Unfortunately, these ideologies wouldn't end there, as we still see them this day.
• The Earl of Rochester: John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester was a poet from the 1600s, just not the kind we would expect from that era. Much of his greatest works were smut and for the longest time this was not appreciated, until now
• The Flood Myth: "Instructions of Shuruppak" is one of the oldest documents we know of, the oldest version thought to be from 2600-2500 BC and it was thought to be a text of great wisdom, a document from a father to his son on how to live a good life. But there's more to that, so much more. As it also refers to a great flood, potentially THE great flood

We celebrate another year around the sun for our dear podcast by reviewing this last year's topics and talking about any updates we have since found out

https://www.thehumanexception.com/l/file-0158-five-exceptional-years/

In this two-part episode our hosts, Cayla, Nathan and Halli take a look at two topics of intrigue:

• Bog Bodies: Over a thousand bog bodies have turned up across Europe, in at least 250 sites from Ireland to the Baltics. The oldest date back 10,000 years
• Hunt of the Unicorn: The unicorn tapestries enthralled me as a child, the amount of effort put into them is staggering, and the fact that they have been preserved so well is amazing. But then I got to wondering, what exactly is the story behind them? And turns out, we're not 100% sure

In this two-part episode our hosts, Cayla, Nathan and Halli take a look at three topics of intrigue:

• Léo Major, the Rambo of Quebec: Stubborn, focused, and an all-around badass, Leo Major is one of very few soldiers to receive the coveted DCM metal and receive a bar in addition. A native of Montreal, Canada he earned the nickname "The Rambo of Quebec" for his wild feats during WWII and the Korean War.
• Anatomical Venuses: Incredibly detailed, accurate to life wax sculptures of women that could be disassembled to show the workings of human body
• Catatumbo Lightning:  Catatumba means "House of Thunder" in the language of the Bari, the indigenous people of the area around Lake Maracaibo. A well deserved name for a place that receives 1.6 million lightning strikes a year
