Hello Humans! Welcome to the 24th show housed in “The Human Theatre”.
Today, I was honoured to have Benjamin Nivison, the assistant director on Baba Yaya (formerly called Indoni), come on the show. Benjamin and I dive deep into the power of the performing arts to empower people, raise awareness and critical thinking, and evoke change on an individualistic and societal level, how the arts can be used as a therapeutic intervention, the origin story of Baba Yaya, an overview of the training that Baba Yaya offers, their upcoming show called “Phoenix” and so much more!
BABA YAYA (formerly Indoni Dance Arts and Leadership Academy) aims to provide an academy of excellence for dance and integrated arts, based primarily in the culturally rich townships. It has a contemporary African-centred approach, honouring the heritage of South Africa.
There are a number of itinerant staff who teach Indigenous dance, Marimba, Drumming, Indigenous instrument and Marimba-making, Visual Art, Drama, Maths, Literacy and Computers.
A wellbeing programme is also co-ordinated.
The distinctiveness of the BABA YAYA programme lies in its provision of high quality, value-laden post-school professional training to youngsters who wish to pursue a career in dance /multi-disciplinary arts and that lack parental financial support and guidance.
