Welcome to this episode of the Hungarian Heritage Podcast. For this first episode of season 3, I had the pleasure of speaking with Reka Bakos, and Anna Fenyvesi, and they are the authors of the book, Hungarian Roots and American Dreams. Their book is a compilation of people telling stories about their Hungarian family members who emigrated to the United States from Hungary, and some who also returned to Hungary. We are going to discuss how their book started out as an idea about researching their own family trees and sharing stories about Hungarian Heritages. Then, shortly after Reka and Anna met, the stars aligned for them and they collaborated to transform the collected stories into a new book that is dedicated to preserving and sharing the histories of Hungarian immigrants and their descendants. Listen along as we explore all of this, and so much more.
Below, you will find information about how you can connect with Reka and Anna and for how you can purchase a copy of their new book. If you have feedback or questions about this episode or you would like to connect with me at the podcast, you will also find all of the ways to contact me below. On this Season 2 Finale Episode of the Hungarian Heritage Podcast, I again have the pleasure of speaking with Ilka Kocsis, the author of Ilka’s Kitchen. Like bookends to this season, Ilka was my first guest of Season 2, and now she is back on the podcast for the finale episode of Season 2 to talk about her experience as a winner and participant of the Balassi Summer University Scholarship Program in Budapest during the summer of 2023, which is organized by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. We are going to discuss all the details of Ilka’s four week cultural immersion experience… from the application process, to the travel logistics, to the housing and food accommodations, and of course we will discuss the daily schedule of Hungarian language classes and cultural experiences included in the scholarship. Once you hear Ilka tell us about all of the amazing things that are included in this program, I am sure that you will want to apply for the scholarship for next summer. In this episode, Ilka and I will also discuss the SECOND edition of her cookbook memoir, Ilka’s Kitchen, and all the new things that were added to make this second edition. And…Typically, we begin each episode with my guest’s Hungarian heritage, but we have already discussed this topic with Ilka when she was my first guest of Season 2, so if you missed that episode, you should go back and listen after this episode so you can hear more details about Ilka’s family’s journey from Hungary to Australia. But don’t worry, those details aren’t immediately necessary for you to enjoy today’s topics. So let’s get started with our season 2 finale episode that is jam packed important details and insightful conversations with Ilka Kocsis about the Balassi Summer University Program and her cookbook memoir, Ilka’s Kitchen, edition 2. Below you will find information about how you can connect with Ilka to purchase a copy of her book. Sziasztok! Welcome to this episode of the Hungarian Heritage Podcast. This little episode, or Kicsi Pod, kicsi meaning small, is a newer series within our season where we will be discussing smaller topics in between some of our longer interview episodes! We are keeping our Kicsi pod episodes to 15 minutes and under from start to finish. So let’s get started with our Season 2 Episode 12 where I recorded on location at the Somerset Patriots Baseball Game last year for their first annual Hungarian Heritage Night. I asked people to give me three words that describe a Hungarian. Take a listen and see if you agree or disagree with what people said. I think you will be pleasantly surprised to find out how much people admire our Hungarian Heritage culture. Even if we are a little stubborn sometimes! Thanks for listening to this kicsi pod episode of the Hungarian Heritage Podcast. It sure was a fun Hungarian Heritage Night at the Somerset Patriots Ball Game last year! People had such positive ways to describe Hungarians, and I have to say that I think I agreed with all of them! This Saturday, May 18th 2024, the podcast, along with other Hungarian organizations will be back at the Somerset Patriot Game for our second annual Hungarian Heritage Night! You might even get a chance to answer more Hungarian questions and be featured on a future episode. I hope to see you there. Sziasztok!

On this episode of the Hungarian Heritage podcast, I will be speaking with Elizabeth Lukacs Chesla, and she is the author of You Cannot Forbid the Flower, a novel about the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. What’s unique about this novel is how Elizabeth was able to skillfully weave together stories, poems, and historical documents, along with the first hand experiences that her father shared with her about being a freedom fighter during this tumultuous and revolutionary time. As you will hear in the episode, Liz has placed her father in the novel as the main character who serves as the “everyman” or “every Hungarian man”. Listen along as we discover and unpack the slices of our Hungarian heritage, the levels of loss we have all experienced, and maybe discover some things we didn’t realize about this time period and about our own families. After listening, I hope that this conversation sparks a desire for you to dig a little deeper into your own family history, and maybe discover a slice or two of information that you didn’t know about your Hungarian heritage. If you have feedback or questions about this episode, or you would like to connect with me at the podcast, you will also find my email, social media information, and podcast website below. If you’ve enjoyed this episode and you are interested in learning more about this Hungarian Heritage community that we are building, please don’t hesitate to reach out, I would love to hear from you.
