A great indie film written & directed by Tayarisha Poe, known as the 2020 coming-of-age teen drama, "SELAH AND THE SPADES." This movie stars the young cast of Lovie Simone, Celeste O'Connor and Jharrel Jerome, as well as the very handsome and steamy, Jesse Williams. We chat about how parent-child relationships can have a negative influence on the child and how they treat others. We also try to decide on if Selah is the protagonist or the antagonist of the film. Ugggghhhhhh... DANG IT! Episode SEVEN isn't what we wanted it to be... SORRY! For this week, the ICC had to be socially distanced and record via Discord and ran into every problem possible! Audio issues, connection issues, recording issues! You name it, it happened. However, we will still got into our movie of the week, which is a directorial debut by Regina King, the late 2020 film, "ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI." It stars four talented actors, Leslie Odom Jr., Kingsley Ben-Adir, Aldis Hodge & Eli Goree, who take on the roles of four powerful Black icons of the 60s, Sam Cooke, Malcolm X, Jim Brown & Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali). We dig in to the deep message that the film brought and pretty much agree that it deserves the "Award Season" hype that it is getting. To note, during the episode of the original recording, we had a very in-depth conversation about racism and discrimination BUT it was lost... So we will attack it together another day. The Oscar-nominated biopic that retells the powerful & awesome story from the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, "Hidden Figures: The Untold Story of the African American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race." Although it was appreciated for shining a light on three very intelligent Black women, who SLAM White folks at NASA for their racism & sexism in the 60s, the way that this story is specifically told might categorize it as "another White Savior film." Also, we FINALLY take a look at our Enneagram results and discuss how accurate they are! Do our results fit our personalities? On our third episode of the ICC, we review Amy’s pick for the month, the 2000 sports/romance/coming of age/Black drama film, “LOVE & BASKETBALL!” This classic stars two well known Black thespians, Sanaa Lathan & Omar Epps, who both put on performances that we were thoroughly impressed by. On top of the acting, we dig into how Gina Prince-Bythewood told this story and praise her for hitting it out of the park on her directorial debut!.. that's a baseball reference but oh well! The very star studded jukebox musical & romantic comedy (including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan & many more) drops an onslaught of "ABBA bangers" that had two-thirds of the pod singing and dancing along, while the remaining third was left disappointed but turned on (hello, Meryl!).
