After Elijah's experience with God on Mount Horeb, he is commissioned to go and select his replacement. Elijah calls Elisha to come and follow him as his apprentice. Elisha will one day become a great prophet of God much like Elijah. 

In this Psalm, we are reminded of the majesty of God, our frailty as humans, and how God has exalted us by His grace. God has given us the dominion mandate to go into the world as His co-regents and representatives. 

Elijah the prophet had a zeal for God but lacked focus. In our reading, he heeds the words of the wicked queen Jezebel and runs from his life. Just the chapter before the prophet was victorious but now he is running and hiding in fear. 

Jesus is teaching in his hometown synagogue and when he is asked to work miracles as he did in neighboring Capernaum he tells them the story of Elijah and the healing of the Sidonian widow's son. He points out that God had worked miracles among the Gentiles. 

Just before Joshua dies he serves as a mediator of a covenant between God and the people of Israel. He sets the stipulations for the covenant as devotion to God, but the people fail to carry it out. We also see many applications in this passage to our Christian context. 

Moses warns the Israelites when they enter the promised land to remain faithful. They are to be obedient to the Law and remember the great things God has done for them.  

David is languishing in sickness and he is asking for God's deliverance. David appeals to God's steadfast love and he has confidence that God hears his pleas. 

On Mount Carmel, Elijah was in a place of victory and vindication. Not long after this he was running for his life and was living in fear. Elijah went from having the 'hand of the Lord' upon him to listening to the words of an evil queen. 

Elijah has issued a challenge to Israel. It is time for them to chose between the Lord God and the false gods that have been serving. In this reading, God provides conclusive proof that He is the great almighty and Baal is a flimsy false god. 

Elijah returns from exile to bring an end to the 3-year famine over Israel.  Obadiah in the meantime has been protecting the prophets of Israel and subverting the evil deeds of King Ahab. Elijah and Ahab confront one another for the last time before the epic battle at Mount Carmel.
