We have an announcement. We are deviating from our intended order of presentation to address an acute, real-time outbreak of dipshittery.

And it’s going to be delightful. From our perspective, at least.

The immediate catalyst: racism. The underlying questions reach much further.

Welcome to Volume Eight: To America, a new direction in the Intend to Relate intellectual adventure.

We begin with three little words: I. We. Them.

What is an individual? What is a group? What is an entity? And who the hell gets to speak for a “we”?

Groups and entities can be real without erasing the sovereign individuality and moral standing of the people who constitute them. This short introduction establishes that distinction and opens an inquiry into how we relate to one another—not only as lovers and friends, but through communities, institutions, movements, and nations.

The coming conversations will draw on probability, game theory, logic, history, philosophy, stories, and confrontational logic. We will examine inherited beliefs, collective identities, and the claims people make about themselves and others—including our own.

Our aspiration is American idealism: not a claim that Americans are inherently better people, or that freedom of thought belongs exclusively to America, but an invitation to examine, question, and intentionally create a life.

With freedom comes responsibility.
