A common phrase that gets thrown out there to help people feel better is, "Sticks and stones my break my bones, but words may never hurt me." Having been on the receiving end of it, I can assure you that it is not effective. While well-intentioned, it falls short of being supportive. In this episode, I share a speech I gave on that very phrase.

So many of us hold back in life. An avoidance of giving our best effort. Even in the simplest of tasks, we play small. There is this unconscious fear that keeps us from playing at our edges. Fear of failure. Fear of judgment. Most of which are false. We've got to learn to play past those fears. Playing at the edge of our ability. For it is there that provides us with more learning, growth, and joy than anywhere else.

It's not uncommon for a person to experience a bout of loneliness when walking the path of growth & change. Most people will experience that at some point in that journey. It's simple....others are often threatened by your change. When that happens, you have two choices. Remain the same for their safety. Or, walk away from that friendship that is like your other limitations. No longer serving you to be your best self!

One of the most important things we can do is focus on connection with people. What can we do to cultivate connection? That is far more important than gaining the approval of others. Approval-seeking will lead you to people-pleasing tendencies, which do not help create any sustainable connection with another person. Whether it be in a romantic setting, platonic or professional. Connecting with the person is more valuable, to everyone, than approval.

Learning to live a life of self-care is an important step to one's own wellness. Having those rituals in place is what cultivates your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. What is really amazing is when a person embodies such a practice, they are then able to pass it along. Creating generational self-care. That IS the path toward generational healing.
