May 12, 2020The Horse Show: S5E12 - Equestrian Legend, Julie KroneThis week’s guest is record breaking jockey Julie Krone who fought, literally and figuratively, with fierce determination to establish her career in a male dominated sport. Her accomplishments take a few minutes to read with more than 21,000 starts and earnings in excess of $90 million. Julie was just a toddler when her mother set her in the saddle. Who knew then she was destined to become a hero for aspiring female jockeys‽ Julie rode her first Kentucky Derby in 1991. That same year, she became the first woman to ride in the Belmont Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. In 1993 Krone became the first woman to drive home a Triple Crown winner. She retired in April of 1999 an in 2000 became the first female jockey to be enshrined in the National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame as well as other Halls of Fame. Julie reflects with pride but doesn’t dwell on her many achievements, which include being inducted into four Hall of Fames among other numerous awards. Being a mother of a teenage daughter is her priority today and making time to give back to the sport with the Julie Krone Junior Jockey Camp. In Julie's words: 'I want this to be a lesson to all kids everywhere. If the stable gate is closed, climb the fence.'Host: Chris StaffordPodcast length: 49 minsSponsors: Hyland's Earache DropsFor more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
