Andrew Lee was a self-described "indie rock guy" on the road in his indie rock band, In Medias Res, when he found out his father was dying. With this news, he quit music entirely to be with family. Later, he turned back to music to deal with his loss. This new genre-defying music was meant just for himself, until a string high profile artists released records about losing a loved one. These albums from artists he admired (Nick Cave’s Skeleton Tree, Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell, and Mount Eerie (Phil Elverum)’s A Crow Looked at Me) convinced Andrew to release this music under the name Holy Hum. A few Appendices came first, crowned by his 2017 EP, All Of My Bodies.
I had coffee with Andrew (who now lives in New York with his girlfriend) the last time he was in his hometown Vancouver. We hung out in the same apartment where he had lived with all the members of his old band, In Medias Res.
How did the loss of his father change everything about Andrew's life? What's it like to be back in the old band apartment? How is making music about death and loss (just for himself) incredibly freeing? Which songs from his music heroes inspired him to release music as Holy Hum? Is his music "aural monomyth" or something else? What's it like performing songs about an incredible loss night after night? What's it like to move from Vancouver to the centre of art and culture, New York? Who or what is Lunchbox and did Andrew take Lunchbox to New York? You'll have to listen to find out.
