  • E.11 Intuitive Eating Series Continued: Creating Joyful Movement

Whose ready to establish a more joyful relationship with movement?  Welcome to principle #9 of intuitive eating, movement - feel the difference.

When living with diabetes the pressures to exercise can feel even greater, especially if you are feeling added pressures to watch your weight or increase insulin sensitivity.  Such pressures  do little to encourage a more joyous relationship with movement, or help us in finding forms of exercise that we genuinely enjoy.

If you're wanting to learn how to embrace this idea of joyful movement, and are hoping to free yourself of the 'no pain no gain' mentality of exercise past, get ready to embrace this refreshing take on movement.

    On this episode  you'll learn:

    • the difference between the terms movement and exercise
    • the benefit of decoupling movement from needing to change our body, and/or needing it to increase our insulin sensitivity
    • my struggles with exercise over the years
    • the importance of understanding our relationship to exercise as we work towards pursuing joyful movement
    • questions to ask yourself when looking to create joyful movement
    • how joyful movement can beneficial in supporting other principles of intuitive eating, like hunger and fullness.

  • E.10 Diabetes and Intuitive Eating Series Continued: Body Respect

Welcome to episode 10 of the Intuitive Diabetic Podcast where we are continuing our series on intuitive eating with diabetes.

On this episode we look at principle number 8 of intuitive eating- respect your body.  It is in this principle that we've hit a huge turning point in our journey to becoming an intuitive eater.  Realizing that our body is not our fault, and neither is our diabetes (no matter the type!!!).  In doing so we are able to begin treating our body with dignity, while holding the intention of meeting its basic needs.  Things that when dieting, or working to manipulate its size are  impeded.

    In this episode you'll learn:

    • What is body respect
    • The impact of diet culture,  weight stigma, and medical bias on body image, and our relationship to diabetes
    • The concept of genetically determined weight
    • 5 ways to begin creating more body respect

  • E.9 Intuitive Eating, Diabetes and Emotional Eating

Do you struggle with using food as a way to cope with your emotions?  If yes, know you are not alone.  In fact, it is even more common for those of us who have a history of dieting and restriction (as many of us living with diabetes do, and maybe still do).  The important thing to remember and that is not emphasized enough is that using food to cope with emotions is NOT a bad thing, and is completely natural.

On this episode of the podcast we explore principle #7 of intuitive eating - honour your feelings without using food.

What you'll learn in this episode:

    • what the real issue is with emotional eating (hint: it is not about the food)
    • how diabetes and emotional eating can be intertwined
    • the 2 questions to ask yourself before turning to food
    • key reminders as you learn to cope with your emotions in a different way

  • E.8 Intuitive Eating: Diabetes, and respecting fullness.

Respecting our fullness.  Something that seems easy enough right?  Well that is unless you've been conditioned to dismiss or override your body's cues out of a need to follow a diet or meal plan - like the majority of us living with diabetes have been advised to.   This often leads to challenges in recognizing hunger and fullness cues, as well as associated fears in being able to do so.

On today's show we look at fullness and how after years of dieting, restricting, and distracting ourselves we can reconnect with they body's signals and learn to respect our fullness, while also navigating the unique challenges that diabetes can bring with that.

On today's episode you will learn:

    • how diabetes can make eating feel more like something we do on auto pilot
    • the unique diabetes factors that may require us to override fullness
    • how we can get off auto pilot and create more interoceptive awareness supportive of respecting our fullness.

Today's episode is all about principle 5 of intuitive eating - discovering the satisfaction factor and how diabetes, and diet culture can take us further away from food joy and health.

It's too often I hear fellow diabetics share with me their struggles with food, and how the stress of blood sugars, weight loss/body image struggles, and healthism have overtaken the simple joys of eating.  I know, I've been there too!

In today's episode we talk about:

    • the struggles of prioritizing food satisfaction when living with diabetes
    • the role that diet culture plays in impacting our food choices, and how this relates to our ability/inability to maximize food joy
    • the benefits of increasing food joy beyond the food
    • how to navigate blood sugars and food satisfaction together

  • E.6 Diabetes, and challenging the food police

When living with  diabetes we can feel a lot of pressures surrounding our food choices.   Both externally, and within our own heads.  No matter where it comes from, the reality is this food policing has an impact on how we care for our health,  and our diabetes.  But even more impactful though can be how we feel about our choices, and in turn ourselves.  Hello food guilt!  Hello shame!

In our journey to become an intuitive eater with diabetes we need to be able to remove the moral value surrounding food choices and begin challenging this food police.  And so today we explore principle #4 of intuitive eating - challenge the food police to help us do just that.

On this episode you will learn:

    • how to identify your food police
    • the sources where our food police may come from
    • the impact our food police is having on our health (hint: it goes beyond what we are eating, and how we feel about what we eat)
    • how stress influences blood sugars and how our relationship with food is tied into that
    • 4 steps to begin tackling those food policing thoughts

  • E.5 Making Peace with Food. Say What Now? I Have Diabetes!

On today's episode we dive into the 3rd principle of intuitive eating - with a diabetes lens of coarse!  Making peace with food.  Where we want to stop the food fight and give ourselves unconditional permission to eat.....Gah say what?  Yes, you read that right!

I know, this can feel especially scary for someone living with diabetes.  The first time I learned about this principle I was skeptical too!  By the end of this episode however, I hope I will have helped you move past any fear or disbelief related to this principle.  As well as helped you recognize the benefits of adopting this way of thinking for your diabetes well being.

    Key areas we cover are:

    • How to move past those thoughts and feelings that may arise with this principle
    • The idea of should and shouldn't with diabetes and food
    • The idea of restriction and the types of restriction
    • The problem(s) with restriction and having off limit foods
    • How to begin making peace with food
    • The benefit(s) of making peace with food
