Today, Kentucky's 4th Congressional District is hosting what has become the most expensive U.S. House primary in American history — and it is essentially a one-on-one fight between Donald Trump and one of his own Republican members of Congress.

Seven-term Rep. Thomas Massie, a libertarian-leaning Republican first elected in 2012, has spent years clashing with Trump on fiscal policy, foreign policy, and congressional oversight. The breaking point came when Massie announced he would vote against Trump's short-term government funding bill in early 2025 — prompting Trump to post on Truth Social that Massie "should be primaried" and that he would "lead the charge." He followed through, endorsing Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and first-time federal candidate, and personally calling into campaign events to rally voters against Massie.

By election day, over $32 million had been spent in this single House primary — shattering the previous record.
