This weeks Torah Portion is called, Ki Tisa, which means “to lift up, raise or exalt.” Here it’s translated as “take a census” in regards to “ransom”. “So that there may be no plague” is believed to refer to “slaughter in battle”. So, the census was indirectly connected to a soldier in battle. The shekel given was a means of support for the Sanctuary, not just monetarily but also for its purpose in being willing to fight for the Kingdom of Heaven. The goal of this is to elevate Gods will and purpose. However, we have to be careful not to allow our own selves and agendas to rise up, especially if it conflicts with His. We will all inevitably rise up and serve either the Father or the adversary. The children of Israel go from being willing to do what the Lord had commanded them to do, to growing impatient waiting on Moses to come down from Sinai. They rebelled by building a golden calf to worship and thus, were chastised. The Father is seeking wheat among the tares and those willing to carry out His will, not those who grow impatient and take matters into their own hands. Moses is a picture of Messiah who many, because the bridegroom delays His coming, will “forget” and begin to mingle holy and profane. In the parable of the judge who didn’t fear nor regard the Father, we see the widow continually coming before him demanding justice. In the end due to her persistence, the judge avenges her request. If the unjust judge will avenge the woman, will not the Righteous Judge avenge His own? Even if it’s not in our own “timing” the Word says, “He bears long with them.” When He does return will He find us contending for His kingdom, doing our duty or around a golden calf? We must be committed to His cause and continue to lift up our heads to Him.
