In this portion, the plagues of Egypt were approaching their climax. God tells the children of Israel that, because of Pharaoh’s hardened heart, He will do great things, and they will be able to tell future generations of the mighty acts done for them. But things must run their course until the appointed time. Waiting on the LORD stretches our faith. When will He act? Will He act? Is the enemy going to get away with this? But the day of our deliverance has already been determined; it is for us to wait on the LORD. King David said it well in Psalm 27 when he said, “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!” He is being vigilant for us and we must be vigilant as well in anticipation of our vindication, our deliverance and redemption. There is coming a day when we will see God move on our behalf, because He has kept vigil over His people. And so when Pharaoh hardens his heart, don't be disheartened. Lift up your head, your redemption, a night to be remembered, is at hand.
