The Unexpected Blessing

What does obedience look like? Obeying the Father never turns out the way we think it will. Jacob fell in love with Rachel because of her outward beauty, but perhaps Leah was actually the bride Yahweh chose for Jacob. After the deception of Laban, what if Jacob had stopped and said, “Ok Yahweh, you sent me here to get a wife, now I have one, is this what YOU intended?” When we assume we know what the Father is doing, determine what obedience looks like to us, and fix something so rigidly in our minds thinking, “This is the only way my obedience will work out…” We can miss His will and wander around the wilderness for a while. Especially if you have a “mission” - a thing you heard from Him. Something you have been praying for or waiting on and you have it all mapped out in your mind - this is how it will look… don’t be surprised when you see Le’ah and not Rachel. It never turns out how we thought, but it always turns out how He said it would.

While the previous portions have focused on Abraham and his journey and the attributes he displayed that we need to glean from, this portion prompts us to similarly look at the life of Sarah, in retrospect. Most notably that she was more than a wife and mother… a matriarch. In considering the life of Sarah, there are few things we should note. Specifically, her attributes that we should strive to emulate. For example, her willingness to follow Abraham into the unknown. Yes, she was flawed, but she was strong and decisive. After she was buried, Abraham determined to find a wife for Isaac not among the women of the land in which he dwelt. Eliezer set out to find a bride, focusing on character and not necessarily physical beauty. He was looking for the next matriarch. A woman who, like Sarah, was more than what man tends to celebrate - someone who demonstrated good character. Judaism teaches that a person should be beware of bad character traits even more so than being zealous to keep the commands, because someone who keeps the "letter of the law" isn't necessarily of good character. With Rebecca, we immediately find that there was something unique about her character that made it possible for her to receive God's ways.
