The life of a walk-on isn’t exactly glamorous. You’re not on scholarship. And you have to work harder than everyone else to prove yourself. But usually, that hard work pays off—which is exactly what happened for defensive lineman Sam Burt. A Kansas native, Burt was an All-State caliber player. But the major college offers never really materialized. So he walked on with the Jayhawks, knowing he’d have to fight for his place. Burt won that fight, and is getting to live out his dream of playing major college football. On top of that, he’s getting to influence the next generation of Jayhawks, leaving the program in better shape than he found it.

He was one of Les Miles’ first recruits, and he’s quickly becoming a defensive leader for the Jayhawks. Kenny Logan had offers from some of the biggest programs in the country—Auburn, Miami, Nebraska just to name a few.  He’s a guy the coaches can count on to help shape the Jayhawk defense moving forward. But how’d he get here in the first place? His brother, Brandon James, played at Florida, and has played an even bigger role in Kenny’s life. He’s the one who Kenny looks up to, and who made him want to be great at football. And though it’s not easy to live up to the family standard, Kenny Logan is well on his way.

How does a kid from England—who played in the youth systems of Premier League clubs end up building one of the top college soccer programs in America? Mark Francis’ love of soccer—or football, depending on where you’re listening—has taken him halfway around the world to Lawrence, where he’s transformed the Jayhawk program into one of nation’s best. That rise, so far, has culminated in the program’s first Big 12 Championship in 2019. A star player in his own right, Francis has lived his life in the game he loves. From the intense and competitive youth systems of the Premier League to starring in the American college game and playing professionally in the States … those experiences have shaped him into the coach he is today.  And despite the success, Francis isn’t satisfied. And it’s those grand visions that have led Francis and the Jayhawks to new heights.
