It just horrifies me that there was a time when other-abled people and the affects of their disabilities could be publicly exhibited for the amusement of others but believe it or not that was reality for people with disabilities in America from the 1840s-1940s when they weren’t being institutionalised

Due to coronavirus Australians with disabilities are being cut off from medical services and insurance services and are being given little information on how to protect themselves during the crisis.

People with Disabilities have often faced great challenges when it comes to gaining political empowerment due to stigma and the fact that the political world values strength and the reality of many campaign  venues may be inaccessible to wheelchair-users among other factors. That doesn't mean that its impossible as we'll see today even in countries where disability is  stigmatized such as Greece and Turkey  people with disabilities are able to hold government office and use their disability to help raise awareness about disability people and their rights. Hopefully we can learn from them and empower with disabilities in other parts of the world.

This is part 1 of a two part series on the history of past perceptions about disability in Europe. The ancient Greeks and Romans essentially set the foundations for Western culture that Europe would then spread throughout the world via colonisation. Today we look at some of their views on disability.

Disability and COVID-19 have a few common qualities and one of those qualities is Xenophobia. This outbreak has brought about nothing but fear and misunderstanding in everyone. In this episode I talk about the one thing that we can learn from all is that we need to put aside our fears and work together to stop coronavirus xenophobia and in doing so we can work to stop disability xenophobia and in doing take a giant leap forward in creating a more equal world.
