This week on the first segment, Rochelle Zucker continues to spotlight Jewish music artists who have shown longevity in their careers and are still active and vital today.First she presents selections from a recent recording - Songs of Desire - by Pharaoh's Daughter. The innovative group - founded in 1995 blends Jazz inspired stylings with Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, French, Spanish, and English texts, Basya Schechter is the founder, bandleader, vocalist and composer. Songs of Desire is a deeply personal project Basya began in 2012. It transforms the Song of Songs - Shir Hashirim into a contemporary meditation on love in all its forms- romantic, spiritual, fractured, and enduring.
Rochelle then focuses on Sarah Aroeste. For 25 years Sarah has been one of a small handful of composers writing original new music in Ladino, the historic language of Sephardic Jews descended from those expelled from Spain in 1492.The songs you will hear are from a recording to be released in October - Orijinal (En Bivo). On it Sarah revisits 11 of her compositions that have been fan favourites over her career.

Jewish Radio is a Winnipeg Institution predating many of the others. It was started almost 80 years ago by Moshe Cantor, continued by Noah (Noyakh) Witman. After Witman's death, for almost 20 years, until his retirement in 2019, Sid Halpern served as Executive Producer. He was the "neshome" - the heart and soul of The Jewish Radio Hour. It was a labour of love. As well as hosting interesting and informative programs, he organized things and secured financing so we could continue. The show is hosted by a group of volunteers. We are not supported by The Jewish Federation but are an integral part of The Community keeping our rich culture and Heritage very much alive.
