Last month Rochelle Zucker saw online that The Sisters of Sheynville (SOS) would be having a 20th anniversary mini reunion. SOS were an all-female Yiddish Swing Klez band from Toronto.  They delighted the audience in Winnipeg in 2008 at the first Mameloshen Festival. This week Rochelle features selection from the CD Sheynville Express.

This Monday, May  26th is Yom Yerushalayim,  the national holiday in Israel that celebrates the victory in the 6 Day War in 1967 that reunified the city of Jerusalem.

On the Yiddish sement, Rochelle presents songs from what she considers a truly remarkable Yiddish recording Yerushalayim Shtot Fun Gold - Ale Lider fun Di Zeks Teg    (Jerusalem of Gold - All the Songs of the Six Day War) performed by David Eshet.  The words provide an interesting insight into the times.  But the most striking thing is that the recording was made in Israel in 1967, in Yiddish at a time when the Israeli government had a completely negative attitude to the Yiddish language and very strongly discouraged people from using it.
