The banking sector is huge. In this episode we cover what it’s like working in commercial banking, for renewable and sustainable businesses. Sam’s job is customer facing, which is just one part of his job he loves.

We learn that you don’t just have to study a STEM degree to get onto a grad scheme too, which is very reassuring.

There are so many arms of banking - private, risk, investment, retail etc. And it’s really interesting hearing Sam’s opinion on how they differ, but also learning how many different positions there are within each one, from human resources to lawyers.

Sam gives us some great tips if you’re considering getting into this industry, from reaching out to associates on LinkedIn and keeping up with trends etc. It’s just a brilliant overview of banking in general.

Saatchi & Saatchi are a well-known advertising agency and we talk to Sam about his journey. We cover how it’s structured, how some designers don’t necessarily go to Uni, but most do.

Working with multiple clients, and brands can be stressful, so it’s important that you can work under pressure because of the quick turn-around.

It’s interesting talking about the differences between communication design and branding. But also, the difference between working for an “agency” and working directly for a “brand”. The short story is Saatchi & Saatchi as an agency, have multiple clients. Whereas working directly at a brand, you only work with that one.

In this episode we talk to Charlie, a graduate associate at PwC.

School — Uni — Travel — Café job — Recruitment job = PwC (not just Uni = PwC.)

Charlie had 2 years post Uni before he got his graduate job at PwC.

His job now, is to go into a company, and make sure all their financial statements give them a true and proper view of the position they’re in at that time. Shifting through all their info and making sure there are no mistakes.

We love this episode. Charlie’s route into PwC isn’t a traditional one, and it is refreshing to hear. We learn how experience and time can help your application better than you can ever imagine.

After talking to Alex, we learn that experience is paramount and you can do this at any stage of your life, you just have to put the time and effort in just like he did.

It’s a tremendously rewarding job, and the work life balance is one of the best we’ve ever seen.

It isn’t a large industry which could mean it’s very competitive. This is also why passion and experience within the environment sector is so important.

Ever seen the John Lewis Christmas ad? Well, believe it or not, there’s a huge team of people, that don’t work for John Lewis, making that advert. John Lewis pay an “advertising agency” to do that. This is the advertising industry, or for the better word, part of the creative industry.

What do they do? They come up with ideas for the advert, they plan strategy behind the campaign, they produce it, they run it across different media channels (TV, Radio, Social) etc. The job is massive.

Elliot’s job as a copywriter and creative is a mix of coming up with campaign ideas, and also writing lines and scripts for those campaigns. It’s very tough, but very fun.
