Supporters of closing off the parklets said that keeping them open would saddle business owners with the responsibility of cleaning the spaces of any overnight messes or dealing with any after-hours noise from people using the spaces. Supporters of keeping the parklets open overnight said they wanted to preserve public space for use by the public.

The Defense Department is considering some form of military support for Haiti as the impoverished island nation continues to reel from the assassination of its embattled president.
