The report "is a code red for humanity", says the UN chief.

The California Republican Party has elected not to endorse any of the candidates running to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election, prioritizing unity over a potentially divisive selection.

Hours before party delegates were set to choose between four Republican candidates, a pair of party officials circulated a motion to scrap the process and instead issue no endorsement. They warned that selecting one candidate could make it less likely that voters recall Newsom because “the CAGOP tipping the scale may deter some voters.” That motion prevailed with party chair Jessica Millan Patterson in support.

The Dixie Fire burning in two Northern California counties is now the largest single wildfire in recorded state history, exploding in size overnight as drought-stricken lands continue to fuel the flames.

The fire, which has burned for 23 days and forced mass evacuations, razed the Gold Rush town of Greenville on Thursday, destroying 91 buildings and damaging five others.

San Francisco’s public school teachers and staff are not required to get vaccinated against the coronavirus to return to the classroom in less than two weeks. However, the district has asked employees to submit their vaccination status, officials reiterated at a town hall last week.

“We have encouraged all of our staff to get vaccinated,” Vincent Matthews, the district’s superintendent, said Tuesday. “We are currently assessing exactly who is vaccinated. We’re going to use that data to determine what our next step will be.”

In July, California announced that masks will be required indoors at schools.
