Andy Summers is an English guitarist, songwriter, and composer best known as a member of the iconic rock band The Police. Born on December 31, 1942, in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, Summers began his musical career in the 1960s, playing with acts like Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band and the Soft Machine before joining The Police in 1977.

With his sophisticated use of guitar effects, including delay, chorus, and reverb, Summers created the atmospheric and distinctive sound that became a hallmark of The Police’s hits, such as “Message in a Bottle,” “Every Breath You Take,” and “Roxanne.” His fusion of jazz, rock, and reggae influences set him apart as a highly innovative guitarist.

Beyond The Police, Summers has had a successful solo career, releasing numerous albums that explore jazz, ambient, and world music. He’s also a noted photographer and author, with his autobiography, One Train Later, offering a candid look at his life and career. Summers’ unique style and contributions to guitar playing have solidified his legacy as one of rock music’s most influential guitarists.

Sammy Hagar recently shared the story behind his song “Eagles Fly” in an episode of his Storytime YouTube series, revealing how it was almost a Van Halen track before being dismissed by Alex Van Halen—only for Alex to later regret the decision when the song appeared on Hagar’s 1987 solo album, I Never Say Goodbye.

“I’m at the studio,” Hagar recalled. “I’m playing it for Ed, and Alex is standing in the background. I’m on acoustic guitar, and Alex says, ‘Sounds like John Denver!’”

Hagar couldn’t help but laugh at the memory. “I’ll never forget it! I’m thinking, ‘Yeah—what’s wrong with that? John’s a badass! Shut your mouth when you’re talking about John!’ It was just such a funny reaction.”

Hagar eventually recorded “Eagles Fly” for his solo album, with Eddie Van Halen contributing guitar, bass, and backing vocals. When Alex later heard the finished version, his tune changed.

“Alex heard it on the record,” Hagar explained, “and he said, ‘Hey, man, you should have saved that for Van Halen!’ I reminded him, ‘Dude, don’t you remember what you said about it?’”

Although it wasn’t released as a Van Halen track, “Eagles Fly” became a staple of their live performances during Hagar’s time in the band. “It’s ironic,” Hagar noted, “because it became one of Alex’s favorite songs. It was also one of Eddie’s favorites. It really should have been on a Van Halen record.”

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Hagar added, “That would’ve been incredible on OU812, but it is what it is. It’s a song I’ll play for the rest of my life.”

During an appearance on AXS TV's Vinyl Obsession podcast, MÖTLEY CRÜE's guitarist John 5 shared his love for VAN HALEN's iconic 1978 debut album and KISS's Love Gun. Speaking about Van Halen, he said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):

"I bought this just because the cover said 'Gene Simmons,' and he worked on the record. I remember putting it on, and this album gave me the biggest shock because of the sound. I was already playing guitar, and it was like seeing a regular car but then seeing a race car. Eddie's guitar playing really freaked me out. And with Dave's [Lee Roth] vocals, Mikey's [Anthony] harmonies and bass playing, and Alex's [Van Halen] drumming, it was just incredible. Without these four guys, it wouldn't have been the same."

On what made Eddie Van Halen's playing so unique, John 5 elaborated:

"I remember using Eddie's rig and realizing it's all in the hands. His attack and the way he played were what made him sound like Eddie. You can hit all the notes, but players like Eddie or Yngwie Malmsteen have a unique swing or attack that's impossible to replicate. That's what made Van Halen so special."

SYSTEM OF A DOWN drummer John Dolmayan recently shared his thoughts on VAN HALEN's impact during an interview with Paltrocast host Darren Paltrowitz. When asked if VAN HALEN inspired him to start playing drums, Dolmayan explained, "I wanted to play drums before I even knew who VAN HALEN was. But VAN HALEN introduced a unique style. While some of the drumming might have hints of [LED ZEPPELIN's] John Bonham—because, honestly, everyone’s drumming has been influenced by Bonham since his time—they brought their own twist to it. VAN HALEN’s style was more straightforward and heavy, like a blend of AC/DC and LED ZEPPELIN, combined with exceptional musicianship. At that time, there were a lot of great musicians, but few played as melodically as VAN HALEN. Each member of the band brought something distinctive and compelling to the table, regardless of how they were perceived."

As previously reported, SYSTEM OF A DOWN will embark on a series of stadium shows in South America next spring. The "Wake Up!" tour begins on April 24 in Bogota, Colombia, and concludes on May 10 in São Paulo, Brazil. Additionally, the band has added second shows for their massive stadium events in North America later in the year. These include performances in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at MetLife Stadium on August 27 with KORN; Chicago, Illinois, at Soldier Field on September 1 with AVENGED SEVENFOLD; and Toronto, Ontario, at Rogers Stadium on September 5 with DEFTONES. Their Toronto dates will mark the first time a hard rock act has played two nights at the brand-new Rogers Stadium. Special guests POLYPHIA and WISP will open all shows.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN has toured intermittently since ending its hiatus in 2011 but has only managed to record two songs in the past 19 years: "Protect The Land" and "Genocidal Humanoidz." Released in November 2020, the tracks were inspired by the conflict between Artsakh and Azerbaijan. Proceeds from the songs, along with donations from fans through social media, raised over $600,000 to support humanitarian efforts in the band's ancestral homeland of Armenia.

Mike Rutherford's Secret Tapes: Lost Recording Sessions with Eddie Van Halen Revealed!

In a stunning revelation for the guitar world, Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford has disclosed that he secretly recorded several songs with Eddie Van Halen during the late legend's prime.

This news comes on the heels of former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony's comments that Eddie’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, is safeguarding a massive archive of demos. “We recorded every idea we had,” Anthony explained. While Alex Van Halen earlier this year released the final song he worked on with his brother before Eddie’s passing in 2020, Rutherford’s revelation hints at even more unheard Eddie Van Halen recordings than fans ever imagined.

Speaking with My Planet Rocks, Rutherford shared that it wasn’t his guitar playing that first caught Eddie’s attention but rather an unlikely aspect: his voice. “Eddie heard a song from my second solo album, Acting Very Strange [1982], which I sang,” Rutherford recalled. “He called me up and said, ‘Will you do some writing?’ My voice, of all things!”

The collaboration brought Rutherford to Los Angeles, but he quickly found himself out of sync with Eddie’s nocturnal creative process.

“I brought some gear and went to his studio,” Rutherford said. “Eddie told me, ‘Come over about 1:30.’ And I thought, ‘That’s perfect, just after lunch.’ But he meant 1:30 a.m.! He started at night and worked through the early hours. I just couldn’t do it.”

Despite the late hours, Rutherford took the opportunity to work with Eddie. “We had some sessions. We wrote songs. Bits and pieces,” he revealed.

Surprisingly, Rutherford has yet to revisit the recordings. “I’ve got two boxes of cassettes. I’m not sure I’m mad enough to go through them!” he admitted. “Eddie was an incredible player, and we had a great time, but working through the night wasn’t my style.”

Rutherford, now preparing for a UK tour with Mike + The Mechanics, noted that late-night sessions often didn’t yield productive results. “You’d show up the next day and think, ‘What was that all about?’”

Eddie Van Halen’s collaborative spirit extended to many other artists, as Alex Van Halen has also revealed. Earlier this year, Alex shared that the Van Halen brothers attempted a project with Chris Cornell and even considered an Ozzy Osbourne-fronted Van Halen lineup, though both ideas ultimately fizzled.

While Rutherford’s tapes remain untouched, the prospect of lost Eddie Van Halen material continues to fuel excitement, adding another layer to the legend’s enduring legacy.
