Andy Summers’ heavily modified Telecaster, a cornerstone of The Police’s early sound, remains a mystery. In 1972, while teaching in California, Summers bought the guitar from a student. Already well-worn, it featured a humbucker in the neck, a phase switch, and an active boost controlled by a third knob. Though Summers only recalls adding Schaller tuners, much of the guitar’s history is uncertain. While Summers identifies it as a 1961 model, others suggest it could be a 1963 Telecaster Custom, possibly with a 1950s neck given its maple fretboard, though this is debated.

The Telecaster became central to The Police's unique sound, but it wasn’t until 2006 that Fender decided to reproduce it. Summers had originally approached Fender about building a Strat with a Steinberger TransTrem, but the guitar giant received so many requests for his Telecaster that they instead launched a limited run of 250 Tribute models in 2007, priced at £9,399. The release coincided with The Police’s reunion and Summers’ autobiography One Train Later. One of the Tribute models recently resurfaced for sale at nearly double its original price.

To create the Tribute series, Fender’s master builder Dennis Galuszka closely examined Summers’ original guitar. Despite this, the guitar’s true origins remained elusive. No identifying dates were found on the neck or body, and Galuszka speculated that the neck might be from a 1950s Telecaster, based on remnants of white blonde paint. The body had been routed so heavily that no original markings were left. While adding a Gibson humbucker and phase switch was a common mod at the time, the brass bridge and active boost circuit were more unusual.

The guitar’s secret weapon was its active boost, controlled by a mini-toggle switch near the bridge. Yet the person who installed these mods remains unknown. Despite The Police’s massive success, no one has come forward to claim credit for the modifications. Summers, too, has never revealed the name of the student who sold him the guitar.

Summers (or someone else) continued modifying the guitar after purchasing it. In a 1978 performance, the Tele still had its original three-saddle bridge, but by late that year, Summers had replaced it with a six-saddle bridge. The bridge pickup was also direct-mounted to the body, likely due to routing required for the brass bridge plate. Photos show a crack in the plate between the pickup and control plate, which Summers left unaddressed.

The guitar’s pickups also remain a puzzle. Fender’s team found that a Seymour Duncan ’59 humbucker closely resembled the neck pickup, while the bridge pickup seemed custom-made. The active boost circuit, added before Summers bought the guitar in 1972, required routing to fit a nine-volt battery, which was uncommon for the early ’70s. The Tribute model replicated this feature using a modified Eric Clapton mid-boost circuit since the original was no longer functional.

Despite its iconic status, the Telecaster has only been reproduced in limited numbers. Guitars with humbuckers or phase switches are common, but the active boost remains rare due to the substantial modifications needed to fit it into a Telecaster’s small control cavity. It’s intriguing that, for such a well-known instrument, no mass-market model has ever been made, and that the person responsible for its groundbreaking mods remains anonymous.

Summers’ heavily modified Telecaster played a vital role in shaping the sound of The Police and became one of the most unique instruments in rock history. It’s remarkable that such an influential guitar was modded by an unknown individual whose work helped define a band that sold millions of records. Hopefully, one day, the person responsible for these now-legendary modifications will get the credit they deserve.

When Van Halen exploded onto the music scene, they were a breath of fresh air. Their sound was grounded in hard rock, a style familiar to audiences, but Eddie Van Halen’s innovative playing, unique song structures, and electrifying energy placed them far beyond any competition.

However, Van Halen’s signature sound wasn’t just due to Eddie’s guitar work—David Lee Roth played an equally pivotal role. As one of the most dynamic frontmen of his time, Roth’s voice and stage presence perfectly matched the band’s high-energy style, captivating everyone who saw them perform. Gene Simmons once remarked on Van Halen’s impact, saying, “When Eddie came along, nobody played like that... I’m not even talking about the quality of the songs or Dave completely taking the frontman role to the nth degree. At that time, Dave was the king. If Jagger stood next to him, it would be like a sixth grader standing next to a pro.”

Despite their success, tensions within the band led Roth to eventually part ways with Van Halen. Many fans feared that losing such a legendary frontman would spell the end of the band, but instead, it marked the beginning of a new era.

When Sammy Hagar stepped in as the new lead vocalist, Van Halen reached even greater heights, consistently releasing chart-topping albums. Hagar’s smooth transition into the band brought a shared creative vision and a fresh energy, as Eddie Van Halen reflected, “From the first second, Sammy could do anything I threw at him. It just opened up a whole new door. Finally, we felt like four people with a common vision. Everything felt complete.”

Determined not to be seen as a mere replacement for Roth, Hagar insisted on contributing to the band's evolution. He was committed to creating something original, bringing his own style and songwriting to the group. His refusal to sing Roth’s songs emphasized his desire to bring something new to Van Halen’s sound. “What I brought to Van Halen was just who I was,” Hagar said, “It was Sammy Hagar at that moment, deeply inspired by Eddie Van Halen’s musicianship. He inspired me to write ‘goosebump’ songs.”

With Hagar on board, Van Halen continued to evolve, blending their raw energy with a more polished, experimental approach, ensuring that they remained at the top of their game.

JANE'S ADDICTION has canceled the remainder of their U.S. tour following an onstage altercation between singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro at their September 13 concert in Boston. The incident occurred when Farrell bumped into Navarro and appeared to shout at him. Navarro responded by placing a hand between them, after which Farrell seemed to throw a punch. A crew member intervened to break up the situation.

On September 16, the band members—Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins—released a statement citing Farrell’s mental health as the reason for canceling the tour: "Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have no choice but to discontinue the current U.S. tour."

The band expressed regret but emphasized concern for everyone’s safety and the inability to ensure a quality performance. Refunds will be available at points of purchase or third-party platforms.

Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, detailed the tension leading up to the Boston incident on Instagram, explaining that Perry had been frustrated by the band's volume, which he felt drowned out his voice. Struggling with tinnitus and throat issues, Farrell became upset when the band began playing “Ocean Size” before he was ready, causing him to scream to be heard. Etty also alleged that Avery put Perry in a headlock and punched him before the altercation was broken up.

Despite Farrell being seen drinking wine during performances, Etty clarified that alcohol was not a significant factor, noting the wine was mostly for show.

This tour marked Navarro’s return after missing previous tours due to long COVID, with Troy Van Leeuwen and Josh Klinghoffer filling in during his absence.

Justin Hawkins of The Darkness has collaborated with Atkin Guitars to create a signature Super S guitar that draws inspiration from Eddie Van Halen's iconic Frankenstein guitar. The heavily aged, neon-colored guitar features a Gotoh tremolo, custom hand-wound pickups, and an empty middle pickup cavity. Notable elements include a reverse headstock, a JH3001 logo at the 12th fret, and a relocated pickup switch inspired by Les Paul guitars. Though pricing and production details haven't been released yet, fans can expect updates soon.

When Joe Satriani was announced as part of Sammy Hagar’s Best Of All Worlds Tour – seen by many as the closest thing to a Van Halen tribute – he embarked on a lengthy journey to perfect his tone for the role.

Satriani admitted his usual rig wasn’t up to the task, so he created a new setup to capture the essence of Eddie Van Halen’s iconic sound. This included collaborating with 3rd Power to develop a tube amp inspired by Eddie’s Marshall and modifying stock EVH Frankie guitars with speed knobs, Sustainer pickups, and other tweaks.

As Satriani shared in Guitarist, these modifications were essential, as he initially struggled with the Frankenstein guitar, finding it nearly unplayable. “I tried seven Frankensteins and had to rely on the shop owner’s advice on how they sounded. The one that works for me now didn’t sound great right out of the box.”

When Joe Satriani first picked up the Frankenstein guitar, he found it "lifeless" and struggled to keep it in tune. It took him two weeks of constant adjustments to make it playable. To solve these issues, Satriani reached out to Eddie Van Halen's former guitar techs for advice on optimizing the design. They shared their techniques, like filing down specific parts, adjusting screws, and making tweaks to improve tuning stability.

Taking creative liberties, Satriani adapted the guitar to his needs, even replacing the pickup with a Sustainiac to handle a variety of songs from Van Halen, Chickenfoot, and his own catalog. "I didn’t have time to switch guitars between songs, so I made each one work for multiple things," Satriani explained.

Despite facing criticism from some fans for altering such an iconic instrument, Satriani embraced the challenge, even joking that Eddie might haunt him for it. His modifications paid off, and he’s now confidently playing Eddie’s parts on the Best Of All Worlds tour. To prepare, Satriani didn’t just revamp his gear—he also studied how other guitarists interpreted Eddie Van Halen's legendary style.
