Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is en route home after spending most of the week in China, a week that was focused mostly on boosting trade and investment ties. The BC Court of Appeal ruling revolved around a 2006 decision to replace life-long disability pensions with one lump sum payment, which veterans said amounted to a 40 per cent cut in benefits for some wounded soldiers. The three-judge panel dismissed the case saying Parliament always has the ability to amend federal laws and Ottawa has clear constitutional authority to legislate in this area.

What has traditionally been a safe Conservative seat was much closer than usual in the last federal election, with the Liberal candidate losing by only 1500 votes. Conservative candidate Diane Watts prevailed in 2015, but stepped down to run for the leadership of the Provincial Liberals.
