On the turntable today is Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Ozz.  At the time of the album’s first release on September 20th, 1980, Ozzy wasn’t an artist going through the motions.  For the previous decade he had fronted Black Sabbath and while the band’s music had focused on dark imagery and demons, Ozzy battled demons of his own.  Those demons led to his break with Sabbath.  Blizzard of Ozz was Ozzy’s return.  This album wasn’t just a man redefining himself - it was a man who had dragged his demons along for the ride.

I discovered one of my favorite bands purely by accident.  I was sitting in study hall, which was basically free time to do whatever you wanted, and I had nothing to do.  The kid in the desk next to me drew a symbol on his notebook. It looked like a cross, but the bottom half of the cross was curved, like an upside down question mark. Beneath the symbol, he wrote the words...

On the turntable today is Billy Squier’s Don’t Say No.  A true rock classic if there ever was one.  The album was released on April 13, 1981 and, from the start, it’s obvious that Billy has put together something special.

I had just entered my thirties when I was introduced to the music of Nick Drake.  Nick had only produced three albums before dying at twenty-six in 1974.  Nick's fans are a select group with secret knowledge of an artist who lived a brilliant and brief life, and left us with a collection of songs that contain magic, sadness, and a longing.

One afternoon, in the summer of 1982, I was listening to WBCN out of Boston when the DJ at the time played a song which had me transfixed.  The sweeping, snake-like guitar felt like a strange ride, and, combined with the vocals that chased it, the song was unlike anything I’d ever heard.

I was an awkward kid, just entering my teenage years, and I was looking for a hero.  I found him in the pages of 'No One Here Gets Out Alibe'. Jim Morrison was dark, poetic, and rebellious.  The Doors amplified the darker, Dionysian aspects of Jim’s personality and it was evident in their first self-titled album.

I was nine years old when Elvis Presley died.  Elvis In Person at the International Hotel, recorded live in Las Vegas and released in 1969 changed my life when it came to collecting music.
