One month into the COVID-19 crisis in the US, rheumatologists have begun to feel the effects of our hastily constructed temporary response plans. While we may not be staffing the front lines with our colleagues in emergency medicine and critical care, our patients are uniquely vulnerable to infection and continue to require care.

Two antimalarial agents, chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), have been trusted treatments for a range of rheumatic diseases over the past 70 years. These agents have attracted intense media attention in the past few weeks with suggestions that this category of drugs may have potential in the management of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV2)–associated disease called COVID-19.

As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19; the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2) pandemic took hold in North America, rheumatology clinics across the continent were inundated with phone calls from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who were understandably fearful of COVID-19. One of the most common questions from patients was whether they should stop taking their medications.
