The New Jersey American Civil Liberties Union has petitioned Federal Authorities to commence an investigation into the Newark,

New Jersey Police Department. According to the petition the “Newark Police Department has

engaged in a pattern or practice of conduct by law enforcement officers . . . that

deprives persons of rights, privileges or immunities secured or protected by the

Constitution or laws of the United States.” This conclusion was reached by the ACLU after conducting research, and analyzing complaints and civil actions filed against the Newark Police Department by citizens and its own employees.

On Thursday September 16, 2010, our invited guest will be Deborah Jacobs, Executive Director of the New Jersey American Civil Liberties Union. We will discuss the petition filed by the ACLU and management deficiencies of the Newark Police Department that has caused the persistent acts of misconduct.

Former Newark Detective Karama Thomas was fired after a truthful testimony in court. She was subpoenaed by the defense and testified that she did not see a suspect with a gun. According to Karama Thomas’ Federal Complaint against Newark Police Officials, she suffered mental anguish, physical discomfort, pain and suffering, shame and embarrassment.

On Thursday September 9, 2010, Karama Thomas will be our guest. We will discuss

differential treatment, false charges, and retaliation experienced by Newark Police Officers who report the truth.

According to the Carolina Peacemaker weekly newspaper, thirty-nine officers of color filed an EEOC Federal Discrimination lawsuit against the Greensboro North Caroline Police Department. The Coalition of Concerned Citizens believes that Assistant Police Chief Dwight Crott is recommending the officers for termination as a retaliatory measure. We have received reports that three officers that complained about misconduct have been terminated for non-criminal “administrative charges.” The Carolina Pacemaker reports Captain Charles Cherry was placed on administrative duty last month after assisting several of his subordinates with the filing of grievances.

The Coalition of Concerned Citizens is calling for an outside investigation of the Police Department by an independent citizen board with subpoena powers or by the Unites States Justice Department.

On Thursday September 2, 2010, we will discuss these allegation of misconduct by Greensboro Police Officials. The police officer complainants have been invited to join in the discussion.

The "Courageous Three" were fired after they complained of corruption and discrimination in the Philadelphia Police Department. After a ten year legal battle, a Federal Jury found the Philadelphia Police Department retaliated against Michael McKenna, William McKenna, and Ray Carnation, because they had complained about corruption and discrimination. The "Courageous Three" were awarded 10 million dollars by the jury. However, the presiding judge had to decide if she would declare a mistrial. After taking more than two years to make a decision, the judge did not declare a mistrial. Still, she did put a cap on the amount of money awarded to the "Courageous Three."

Newark Detective Karama Thomas has filed a Federal Law suit against Newark Police Director Gary McCarthy and several police supervisors for “deprivation of rights,” retaliation, and other violations: 2008cv02452.

According to her complaint, supervisors of the Newark Police Department took retaliatory actions against her after she testified truthfully in a murder case.

Passage of the “Fair Sentencing Act” has reduced the sentencing disparity for individuals in possession of Crack Cocaine verses the sentence given to individuals in possession of Powder Cocaine. However, the disparity is still 18 to 1. It means someone in possession of 28 grams of crack cocaine will receive a harsher sentence than someone in possession of 476 grams of powder cocaine. Is race a major factor in this outrageous disparity in sentencing? We will discuss this sentencing disparity and the billions of dollars wasted on the failed war on drugs.

On July 16, 2010, New York Governor David Paterson sign into law (A.11177-A/S.7945-A) the “Stop and Frisk” legislation. The law prohibits retaining, in an electronic database, the personal information of individuals who are stopped, questioned and frisked by police, but are not charged with a crime or violation. This bill was sponsored by Senator Eric Adams, retired New York City Police Lieutenant and former leadership member of 100 Blacks In Law Enforcement Who Care.

According to data complied by the New York City Police Department, the overwhelming majority of people stopped and frisked were Black or Latino. On Thursday's show we will discuss this issue with our guest Eric Josey of 100 Blacks In Law Enforcement Who Care.

Billions of dollars were contributed from all over the world to assist Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January 2010. Despite pledges of $5.3 billion from the international community over the next two years to rebuild Haiti, only a tiny fraction has been delivered. Reconstruction efforts in Haiti have stalled. Citizens of the world have provided sufficient funds to make major improvements to the earthquake stricken country. Why haven’t these funds reached the people who need them the most?
