We don't plant churches, we plant the gospel, make disciples and the church emerges out of new disciple-making. This episode is a walkthrough of the Prayer of Examen. 

Episode 12 is all about the Prayer of Examen as we continue in our series on Extraordinary Prayer and Fasting. We've already had one training episode on Activating Prayer that was more about a breathing out type of prayer. The Prayer of Examen is a breathing in type of prayer. It's less about active mission and more about Jesus and His gospel, through the Spirit and the everyday stuff of life speaking over us. Our hope is that it will be a useful tool in your prayer life.

Lee Price (Episode #9)

Cory and Brian have a second interview with Lee Price. This week we asked Lee to walk us through each of the steps in Activating Prayer. Rather than this just being an interview about Lee’s work, this is more of an equipping podcast with some “on-the-field experiences” mixed in. The stories will demonstrate what this type of prayer looks like in action. Some of these stories, and the ideas and language that Lee uses may stretch your religious world-views a bit depending on the type of background you have. For some of you it resonate deeply. We’d challenge you to come with an open and generous spirit to say “Jesus, what do you want me to hear out of this today? What’s one new step I can take in extraordinary prayer?” Be challenged. Find someone that you can share this with and ask them to have a conversation with you about it. Our hope is that this training will support the work you’re doing in your context.

Lee Price (Episode #8)

Cory and Brian interview Lee Price who is a missionary with NOVO’s Pioneering Initiatives Team. He has been a missionary for over 15 years with a focus on simple church, reproducible discipleship, and activating prayer. He lives in Colorado and has a real passion to ignite a disciple making movement and help equip emerging leaders with missional practices and strategies. He has also helped start a number of nonprofits and works part time as a consultant with local government leaders. The focus of our discussion today will be on Prayer Walking our Missional Space..

This week Lee takes us further on the concepts we explored with Sam Metcalf and brings in some new ideas around training leaders in prayer, specifically activating prayer. We think you’ll be encouraged and also challenged with the stories Lee shares.

In this episode of the Underground Podcast, Brian and Cory interview Sam Metcalf, the president of Novo. Sam and Patty Metcalf were one of four families that founded Novo in 1980, and he has served as president since 1985. He holds an undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree from the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary, and a doctorate from the Fuller School of Theology. He also is an adjunct professor of Missional Practice in the SIS at Fuller. Sam also coordinates CoNext, the global partnership of Novo-like mission entities in a dozen nations that share mutual mission, vision, and values, all led by national leadership. Sam is ordained in the Evangelical Free Church of America. His book, Beyond the Local Church: How Apostolic Movements Can Change the World (InterVarsity Press) is a clarion affirmation to those called to ministry beyond the boundaries of local churches and a validation of the structures necessary for these apostolic leaders to thrive. He’s authored an array of other booklets and articles (available online through Novo). Patty is equally involved in ministry with a particular focus on healing prayer and intercession. Sam and Patty live in Southern California and have a son and daughter, both married, and five grandchildren.

While Sam will talk about the paradigm and idea of leading with prayer, you’ll be encouraged with some practices as well. This episode will probably push the “church filters” for many, but it was a powerful experience as Sam shares stories from his years of experience with making the supernatural natural. Let it push and stretch you. Experiment and practice as Sam suggests, see where Holy Spirit takes you.
