In Parshat Mishpatim, the laws of the Shomer Chinam reveal the hidden power of a shvu’ah and its connection to the Keter, the root of creation. Rav Noson explains that when a person swears falsely, he is spiritually lifting himself and the object to the highest level, misusing the holiness of the oath. The punishment of kefel reflects this ascent and descent—an improper elevation that results in double repayment. At its core, false swearing stems from a blemish in simcha, because one who is truly happy with his portion would never covet what belongs to another. Linked to Shabbat Shekalim and the joy generated by the Ketoret, the message is clear: simcha sweetens judgment, protects us from jealousy, and empowers us to value our good points and serve Hashem with integrity.
