In this inaugural Key Conversation episode, we have a special guest: author of The Twilight Zone Companion, which you've heard me mention quite a few times on the show as a staple text for any Twilight Zone fan. We talk about challenges he had to overcome writing The Twilight Zone Companion, his early work writing stories for Saturday morning cartoons like He-Man; The Smurfs; The Real Ghostbusters; and a little-known Saturday morning cartoon that me and my older sister loved, which was likely my early entry point into Science Fiction. (I'll be curious to see if anyone else remembers it.) Additionally, we talk about his latest work with Space Command, the importance of mentorship, being courageous, changing how we create television with a new production company, and he reveals his moment of awe. Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “A Game of Pool.” Jesse Cardiff, played by Twilight Zone royalty Jack Klugman, carries a very unique burden with him to every pool hall he visits. He knows that he’s the best, but there is one competitor that he can’t beat: James Howard Brown, known to his friends as Fats, played by the incomparable comedian Jonathan Winters. The problem is not that Jesse isn’t good enough; it’s that Fats Brown is no longer with us on Earth, and you can’t defeat a ghost–or can you? One count of professing to the vocation of a librarian, and the more serious charge of being obsolete–no longer useful to the State. You see, if you can no longer be of service to the State, you can no longer be of service to anyone. But, despite the thundering of the Chancellor atop his pulpit of hate, Mr. Wordsworth will hold on to his integrity and keep his head high through his sentencing. He shall be liquidated at midnight, but how it happens is a bit of a mystery. However, it will be televised for the world to see. And when the Chancellor himself shows up to bid Mr. Wordsworth adieu, things get interesting. The bus driver swears that he picked up 6 passengers, and yet there are 7 in the room--8 if you count the cafe owner. There's a mystery to be solved. And when lights start to blink, jukeboxes start playing on their own, and bowls of sugar exploding for no reason at all, things are starting to get serious.

This week we're taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up." We'll try and create a kind of profile for our Martian friend; we'll talk about the role that grandpa plays in this episode; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, a quick anecdote about bringing this episode into my classroom this past semester. Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Mind and the Matter.” Archibald Beechcroft is tired–tired of the constant pushing and shoving, the incessant sounds, the scurrying about like rodents. In short, he’s tired of people. And so when a colleague at work gifts him a strange book titled The Mind and the Matter, which boasts the ability to unlock the amazing, colossal, stupendous power of concentration, Beachcroft is understandably skeptical. But, his skepticism begins to shift when he finally starts to put it to use. In this week’s KOI episode, we’re going to talk a bit about this whole mind over matter concept; we’ll try and figure out why he’s seeing these reflective manifestations of himself; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a rationale for why we could probably use a few more pains in the butt these days. Spoiler alert: We’re discussing important portions of this episode, so if you have not yet seen the episode, I encourage you to watch it first, and then come back and enjoy our analysis. This week, we're analyzing the Twilight Zone episode "Shadow Play."

Adam Grant stands before a courtroom waiting to hear if he will be found guilty of murder and sent to the electric chair. And yet, he seems rather distant, not quite present for such an important moment in his life. That is until the jury finds him guilty, and the judge issues the sentence: death by electric chair. To this, Adam can only laugh. "No!," he screams, bringing his fist down on the table. "You can't make me die again." You see, Mr. Grant has already been through this many times: the judge, the jury, even the execution--a recurring nightmare. But, will this time be different? Will he make his way out of the dream before he has to feel the volts kick him back awake again? For his sake, I hope so.

In this episode, we'll ask the question if Adam can ever beat the dream and stay alive; we'll ponder if he is just lucid dreaming, or if there is something else going on; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, one that is based upon an email that I received from a friend of the show.
