Paul has laid out his defense and proof and now addresses the readers with some questions that are asked in a tone of rebuke.  He’s confronting them head-on again just like in chapter 1:6 with their folly and inconsistency of their behavior.  They have begun to be sucked in by the Judaizers, and Paul shows them that their action contradicts the work of Christ on the cross and contradicts the work of the Spirit in their lives.

Simply put, how can a sinful man justify himself before God? Paul's argument is that he cannot.  The Solution?  Justification by faith in Christ.  The great divine doctrine of the Gospel that has been ignored, misunderstood, and abused is laid out in this section of Galatians by Paul.

From defending his apostleship and authority that was given to him from God alone to the message the Galatians had received from him, Paul has been combating the false teachers trying to undermine all of his work.  After stating the right hand of fellowship had been extending to him from other apostles he now turns his attention to let the Galatians that he confronted Peter face to face in front of others because he had been guilty of turning his back on not only them but the Gospel as well.

Paul has laid out or described his relationship with the original apostles in Jerusalem to show he had learned nothing from them or any man.  Rather, he had been commissioned by the Lord directly to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles.  Now he lay out meeting and receiving the right hand of fellowship with other apostles, never swerving or swaying from the Truth in order that the Gospel of Grace be preserved despite the opposition from all around.

As we have seen Paul becoming a follower of Jesus Christ was so extremely remote that he appeals to his conversion as evidence of the fact that his gospel is "not according to man."  Now Paul continues in his defense and we can get a timeline of events by looking to Acts.

Paul was preaching that Gentiles could be saved apart from Judaism by mere faith in the Jewish Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.  So his opponents charged that he had thrown out the requirements which had been historically laid upon Gentile proselytes to Judaism.   So, Paul continues his defense of his apostleship and gospel by looking at who he was and how God chose him.

The New Testament records an incident where a poor widow gave two small copper coins as a gift into the Jewish Temple treasury. Jesus commends her for giving ‘all she had to live on’ even though the Old Testament law only required a tenth – or tithe – be given to the Temple.  How self-sacrificial!  WAIT!  The reality is that the widow is never commended by Jesus. This is an assumption we have made about the text, especially in light of the fact that church giving is so esteemed amongst Evangelical Christians, who often mistakenly equate the Temple and Church institutions.  So, let's take a look at the context and rethink the widows offering.

This is something that has been mentioned some in the podcast and in sermons by Marcuss.  A topic that can seem to be very touchy with som.  But when you start to study it, along with its history, one can start to realize that it is the majority that believes it is biblical and only the minority that rejects it.  So let's first define who the Christian is and compare that to scriptures about salvation and God's word about it.  If you believe a Christian can lose their salvation then this will be a good starting point for you on the topic of Eternal Security.
