Paul pleads with these people now.  He's making a request that they become like him and what he is referring to is being free from the law.  Paul's taking a break from the defense, instruction, and correction so that he can speak even more so from his heart.

The next part of Paul's interpretative process is the focus of union with Christ for all believers. The conclusion of chapter three is the charter of the New Testament Church and the ground of her invincible claim to be the lawful successor of Abraham, the true Israel, the true circumcision (not in the flesh but in the spirit), the inheritor of the promises and privileges and hope of Old Testament Israel. The last words of chapter 3, "heirs according to promise," are now further discussed in chapter 4.

Still dealing with the theological content of the Abrahamic Covenant, along with the historical relationship between it and the Mosaic Covenant, Paul reminds his audience that will and contracts between men remained intact until their fulfillment.  In the same way, the covenant promise God made with Abraham was not rendered void by the covenant God made with Moses.
