After finishing Galatians last week Marcuss mentioned we may take a look at Soteriology which is the doctrine of salvation.  Most people don't even want to deal with doctrine.  You mention doctrine or theology and a lot of people just shut down.  But to understand more about God and things like salvation, one needs only to grab the bible to take a look and start seeing what God has to say about it.  The biblical point he'd like to make this morning is that regeneration precedes faith.  Because within evangelical churches, there is an ongoing debate on the issue of salvation. Is it by a choice of man's free will or of God's sovereign choice?

We've made it to the end of Paul's letter to the Galatians.  He has laid out many things including the doctrine of Justification by Faith alone.  With that, he has contrasted the flesh and the Spirit which are two mindsets.  There is nothing new being said that Paul has not already said.  These are his highlights, his summary, and his blessing to the Galatians.

Moving into the last section of Galatians, Paul lays out the application for much of the doctrine in which he has laid out in the letter.  To restoring those in the body and bearing burdens for one another.  Being mindful of one's self rather than everyone else around them in order to remain humble and useful.  The goal is service and obedience to each other and to God as we grow and mature in sanctification.

Paul has given a list of manifestations of the flesh and Spirit for contrast and for us to know these things.  We saw these last week and will look at the fruit of the Spirit in more detail today.  Simply put this is sanctification and practical sanctification is spiritual growth which is conformity to the word of God and Christ-likeness. It is walking by the Spirit.

To live by the flesh is depending upon the resources and abilities of the physical body or humanness. To live by the Spirit is depending upon the resources and abilities of the Spirit whom God gives by grace through faith. In both cases, the fundamental issue is "depending." The critical difference is the object of the dependence.

This is Pauls's practice for when he lays out doctrine.  And as you know I'm big on theology and bibilical doctrine because if we are going to live this out right, that is live for God, we need doctrine which also means we need to understand doctrine.  So it's doctrine and practice and this is what Paul does in his writing by moving into the moral-ethical issues related to the Christian life after he's laid out the doctrinal foundation.
