Preterism has become another umbrella term today.  Partial, Full, Hyper.  And while the Full's want to dismiss the Partials, the Hyper's say they are all wrong! It's true they are all different but there are some who are not willing to see or admit this.  Many in the Reformed camp are adamant about Full and Hyper being synonymous which is not only true but highly misleading as well.  So let's take a look and the differences and get a proper perspective on the different types that exist today.

We all know this section of Scripture, especially after the last year.  It has long been used and abused in more ways than one.  Now, while obeying government is being obedient to God there are obviously some things we ought not to obey.  Unlawful laws and the conscience can butt heads.  There is applicability to be had when going through these verses but does it make sense with the overall context of the letter?  To whom was Paul writing and instructing?  Why are these Roman authorities referred to as servants and ministers of God?  Why did Paul use Greek words that refer to deacons in English?  Have we possibly ripped these 7 verses out of context because, after all, it seems to be such an abrupt change for Paul from the rest of the letter? Or maybe it is not such an odd and abrupt change at all and we have missed the overall context.

Before the writer unfolds the main point of his final warning, he prefaces it with another contrast between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. In this case, the contrast is between how these two Covenants beckoned their respective participants to enter.  Verses 18-21 describe the events which took place on Mt. Sinai when the 10 commandments were given to Moses, and the Mosaic covenant was enacted in Exodus 19. By contrast, in vs.22-24, the writer reminds us of how the Lord reveals Himself to His children in the New Covenant. Application is then made in verses 25-29.

We are to run with our eyes fixed upon Christ. Just as an athlete fixes his attention on the goal or prize, so must we fix our eyes upon Jesus, Christ-likeness is our goal. This is a present tense, we are to always be looking unto Jesus.  But foremost in our author's mind was that apparently, these believers had forgotten the teaching of the Old Testament concerning suffering.  They thought that the absence of affliction and suffering was a sign of God's special favor, and conversely, the presence of affliction was evidence of His anger. When actually the exact opposite is true.  So, it is imperative that we keep the proper perspective on discipline, discipline is not a sign of God's disfavor, it is a sign of His love. Because He loves you, He disciplines you, He wants you to share His holiness.

Everyone has their opinion on what is wrong with the Church today and how to fix it.  The thing is, though, most of the fixing isn't from God's word.  This isn't to say we are trying all on our own and God is not involved.  We say that He is.  But what if the example in Hebrews 5 is what the current problem is?  Are people dull of hearing?  Shouldn't we all be teachers by now?  How does that work?

If there is one thing for certain when studying the scriptures, it is that our salvation is secure.  That is, a believer can not and will not, lose their salvation.  But within the Evangelical system today there is such a mixture of different camps many people do not have this assurance.  People live in fear of losing their salvation.  Even more, many people believe it is up to them to maintain this and even perform works to stay on the good side of God.  The Bible says the opposite.

Remember the driving theology episodes?  This is pretty much like that but Marcuss isn't driving.  This and the next couple of episodes are just thoughts, taken from a journal on different topics.  So we explore the topic of resurrection again!  Just so we aren't confused here, the issue has never been about Christ's physical resurrection.  That is a huge part of The Gospel.  The issue at hand is about the believer's resurrection.  Is it on some future last day?  Is it at the moment of death?  Does the Old Testament type of the first fruits play into it and was fulfilled by Christ and the others raised in Matthew 28?  Should we let scripture interpret scripture, which is inspired, or creeds and confessions, which are uninspired, lead us in this topic?

We continue our study in chapter 11 of Hebrews studying the subject of faith.  And as I said last week this isn't just saving faith but living faith.  This is sanctifying faith, the faith that we grow in on a day-to-day basis as we walk through this life with the Lord.  Verses 17-19 begin with the theme of testing or trial. These verses recall the most severe and unexpected trial of Abraham's faith.

Hebrews 11 is one of the most well-known chapters in Scripture, often referred to as the hall of faith.  how does God inspire us to move forward in obedience? His word.  Through the testimonies of those who've gone before us in faith and when faced with fears and doubts, they moved forward in faith and because of that it was pleasing to God and He gave them the strength to face their trials.So the writer expounds on those who have faith and explains the form and purpose of faith.  And he is not simply talking about saving faith but a living faith, not just faith in God for our eternal life but faith in God to carry us through our daily lives.

The writer has now reached the fourth warning of his letter, where he addresses the consequences of his readers returning to a life of false worship under the Old Covenant.  That's it, really.  The sin that is willful that many like to use out of context is not just any sin.  It was/is a specific sin happening then.  This is where proper interpretation becomes critical or else we lose the original meaning, make it say something it doesn't say, and disservice not only ourselves but the word of God.
