Build meals on the food you already have in your kitchen.  This seems like a no-brainer, but I know that unless I'm intentional about building my meals based around the things that I have, I don't do it.  Create a night every week for a catch-all recipe, a recipe to use up all the must eats in your refrigerator, especially the produce drawer. Every culture has these recipes like quiche, tacos, and pizza. These meal ideas are a great place to use the food that you have leftover in the refrigerator to waste less food, water, and $$.

In this podcast I share with you how I built a pizza night based on the ingredients I had on hand for a spontaneous dinner party. I also share with you how I approach cheese, which has a water footprint of 414 gallons per pound on my pizza.

  • I EAT HOW MUCH VIRTUAL WATER?

    Send us Fan Mail

We each eat on average between 500-1300 gallons of water every day. Understanding the virtual water footprint of our food is a great starting point to begin Eating Less Water.

Water footprint totals of some popular foods:

    1 almond = 1 gallon of water

1 slice of bread- 11 gallons of water

1 pound of lettuce = 10 gallons of water

    1 orange = 21 gallons of water

1 apple =33 gallons of water

1 dozen eggs = 276 gallons of water

1 cup cooked rice = 50 gallons of water

1 pound of pasta = 230 gallons of water

1 pound of chicken = 468 gallons of water

1 gallons milk = 720 gallons of water

1 pound of cheese = 414 gallons of water

1 pound of beef = 1800 gallons of water

    1 pound of butter = 3602

Show action tip: Serve more foods on your plate with lower water footprint totals (i.e. more plants on your plate). It’s better for you and for a river.

    Why a Kitchen Activist Podcast?

In the first episode of Why a Kitchen Activist, host Florencia Ramirez, author of EAT LESS WATER, shares how she transitioned her focus from water conservation in the shower to water-saving practices in the kitchen. After selling 80,000 shower timers, Ramirez realized that while conserving visible water—such as that used in sprinklers, showers, and water hoses—is essential, it's only a tiny part of the bigger picture. Most of the water we consume is "virtual water," used to grow and produce our food. Seven out of every 10 gallons of water are used in food production, and each person consumes between 500 and 1,300 gallons of virtual water daily. Ramirez understood that she needed to shift her focus from the shower to the kitchen to make the most significant impact on water conservation.

Ramirez asked herself: Can an individual eater make a difference in global water systems? To answer this question, she traveled 16,000 miles, interviewing farmers and food producers nationwide. The insights she gained are shared in her book, EAT LESS WATER: THE SOLUTION TO WATER SHORTAGES IS IN THE KITCHEN. Through speaking engagements, food workshops, events, and media appearances, Ramirez has consistently been asked the same questions: What should I buy? Where should I shop? What can I do in my kitchen to eat less water?

This podcast is dedicated to answering those questions.

What to Expect from This Podcast:

Listeners can expect straightforward, actionable information about living more sustainably in ways that are easy to understand and implement immediately. Each episode lasts 7 to 10 minutes and will be released on Mondays and Wednesdays. Occasionally, Ramirez will invite guests to share inspiring stories, offer helpful insights, and encourage fresh perspectives on sustainability.

The podcast will address major global issues like water scarcity and climate change, breaking them down into simple, practical tips that listeners can incorporate into their daily lives—because small actions matter in a world where everyone’s plate is already full.

Ramirez will guide listeners through each step of the process, offering tips that are not only low-cost but also time-saving. Most importantly, by adopting these practices, listeners will discover how pursuing sustainability can bring greater joy and a sense of fulfillment as they become part of the solution.
