This week we're looking at the evolution of open plan design into broken plan design - the idea that opening everything up in cavernous spaces isn't always the best way to achieve liveable design.
We're joined by two excellent designers - Stephen Dick from Residence Interior Design and Dan Stronge from Jones Britain - to talk about how they interpret broken plan design principles in both kitchens and bathrooms.
Are kitchen islands getting too big? How do you preserve the character of the building? Shoulds baths be in the bedroom? And, most importantly, did The Beatles invent open plan design....?
Oh, and we hear a blatant shameless plug for www.thesethreerooms.com, our new consumer website spin off from Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms magazine.

This week's episode is all about biophilic design.
If you don't know what that is, don't worry, all will be revealed but at its core it's the art of incorporating nature into interior design - but that's not just sticking pot plants everywhere, it’s about the psychology of how we as humans react to the environment we’re in and how natural materials, shapes, smells and sounds all trigger positive vibes within our brains.
It's fascinating stuff and there's no one more qualified to talk about it than Oliver Heath. He's an interior designer who has been an advocate of sustainable and biophilic design for a long time, as well as regular work on TV shows such as Changing Rooms and DIY SOS (and yes, we do talk about them a bit too...)

Is staying in the new going out? And how is that affecting kitchen and bathroom design?
And how can you as a designer be sure that the bathroom products you're specifying are not only fit for purpose but also safe to use and comply with all legal standards?
So yes, a bit of a mixed bag of an episode as we gather together the editors of Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms, Studio and kbbreview.
That also means, of course, that we have the regular Opening Of An Envelope and Survey Of The Week features (now with added jingles). We learn that Elspeth wants to see less kitchen islands, Lindsay has never heard of Boney M, Rebecca is feeling very down on Watford FC and Andy has no friends, but that probably won't come as a surprise to anyone who's met him...

This episode is a really fascinating interview with the kitchen design icon that is Johnny Grey.
Even after 40 years or so of designing kitchens he is as enthusiastic about advancing the art as ever and continues to push both manufacturers and other designers to consider influences way beyond the furniture.
For him, it’s about thinking much more about wider societal trends and how the human brain computes the space it’s in.
One of his major passions at the moment is the Kitchen Design degree course at Bucks University where he is Visiting Professor of Design and Kitchen Culture and that’s where Managing editor Andy Davies met up with him during a residential weekend for current students on that course.
In a wide ranging interview we discuss:
And in the first 20 seconds you learn that he was conceived in a gypsy caravan – we promise it gets much more designery after that….

We’re looking at trends this week, specifically at how trends influence the consumer and what role the design expert needs to take in curating the sheer volume of choice they faces when they do a new kitchen or bathroom.
Joining Kitchen Bedrooms & Bathrooms editor Lindsay Blair is designer Hayley Robson from DayTrue and Marianne Shillingford, the creative director of Dulux.
In a really interesting and wide-ranging chat they talk about:
All that and a bathroom where hieroglyphics spell out the words ‘have a hot bath ducky’ and chair made from offal. Only on the Kitchen & Bathroom Design Podcast.

This week we're looking at compact design - in other words, squeezing kitchens and bathrooms into small spaces. In a rare trip out of the office, Andy manages to get as far as Fulham to see Sofia Bune Strandh from Sola Kitchens and Rupert Colwill from BathroomsByDesign to talk about how they approach designing small spaces, how they manage client expectations, and how important design skills are to get those spaces right.

It's the launch episode of the Kitchen & Bathroom Design Podcast from Taylist Media. We're the home of kbbreview, Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms and Studio magazines so, in theory, we mostly either know what we're talking about or know someone who does.
To kick us off we've got a very special interview with Charlie Smallbone, a name inextricably linked with premium kitchen design. He talks through his design process, how his ethos has changed, and how he's applying it to Ledbury Studio, his new business based in Notting Hill.
