This is the episode we have been building toward since day one.
Kristen Toepfer's memoir Finding My Voice: A Stroke Survivor's Journey is officially here — and in this special book launch episode, Billy and Kristen sit down to talk about what it actually took to write a book when aphasia makes reading and writing a daily battle, what is inside it and who needs to read it, and what Kristen wants to say to the version of herself who sat in her backyard watching birds and couldn't speak a single word.
The book has twelve chapters — twelve, chosen specifically to honor Kristen's September 12th birthday and stroke anniversary, a date she has chosen to treat not as a day of loss but as a celebration of life and another year earned. From the runway at New York Fashion Week to eight brain surgeries, from two years of complete silence to becoming a published author and stroke and aphasia advocate — every word in this book was earned the hard way. And every word is hers.
But this episode does not stop at the book. Kristen also opens up about something that does not get nearly enough attention in the stroke and aphasia community — what heat and humidity actually do to her brain. This is not about being uncomfortable on a hot day. When temperatures rise, Kristen's ability to find words, process language, and communicate drops significantly. The heat acts as a neurological trigger. It disrupts sleep, compounds fatigue, and creates a cycle that can set back recovery in ways that are invisible to everyone watching.
Kristen talks about what a bad heat day looks like for her, what she does to protect herself when temperatures spike, and what she wants caregivers and family members to understand when they see their person struggling more in summer months. Staying cool and staying hydrated is not a comfort issue. It is a cognitive function issue. And now they will know why.
This episode is for stroke survivors who are still in the dark. It is for the families who love them and want to understand. It is for anyone who has ever lost a version of themselves and had to find their way back to something new. And it is for the person sitting in the backyard right now who cannot speak and does not know yet how the story ends.
