KVI's John Carlson explores the political motives involving the San Francisco Elections Commission which has voted to not renew the contract of the city's elections supervisor, ostensibly, because he is white. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Elections Commission President, Chris Jerdonek wrote in an email Monday to the elections supervisor John Arntz, “Our decision wasn’t about your performance, but after twenty years we wanted to take action on the City’s racial equity plan and give people an opportunity to compete for a leadership position. We also wanted to allow enough time for a fair and equitable process and conduct as broad a search as possible.” The move drew astonishment and criticism from the mayor and other Arntz supporters. State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, tweeted that the department was a mess before Arntz and questioned why on Earth the commission was trying to “dump” a strong leader. City Supervisor Aaron Peskin called the move “bananas.”
