For decades, locals around Lake Worth, Texas have told stories of a creature unlike anything they've ever seen.

Standing nearly seven feet tall, covered in coarse fur, with the head of a goat and the body of a man, witnesses claimed the creature stalked the shores of the lake, leaped across rocky bluffs, and even hurled a tire at terrified motorists.

What started as a handful of late-night encounters in the summer of 1969 quickly exploded into one of America's most famous cryptid legends. Police were called, hundreds of people flooded the area hoping to catch a glimpse of the creature, and newspapers across Texas dubbed it the Lake Worth Monster.

But what did people actually see?

Was it an escaped animal... an elaborate hoax... mass hysteria... or something far stranger lurking along the shoreline?
