Hi Everyone! We still haven't managed to get out together, hit the fields, and uncover new lost stories. Paul, like a Medieval peasant, is still struggling with plague (Covid), and George has been in Devon fossil hunting... BUT, again, we don't want to leave you empty handed so we've given episode 2 the same treatment as last week.

And we've picked this one because it was already a cracker of an episode, and then, when we went back to the recordings, we realised that we'd left so much out! So here is a revamped Storm Severus for you, featuring one of the most incredible Roman coins we've ever seen...

When the boys get invited to walk the newly ploughed land at the mighty Roman fort Combretovium, they jump at the chance. It is George’s birthday after all, this is something he’s wished for, and what they discover littering the landscape is incredible.

But it doesn’t stop there - the old Roman road crosses the river at the end of the fields - so they finish the day waders on and waist deep in ancient waters…

The boys fire up the Landy and head to new fields in a small rural community where memory and story run deep. 

Here, the landscape has been farmed the same way for 1,000 years, and after sifting through old maps and records they set out to discover whether the clay cradles evidence of the village’s haunting past - from Roman burials to the Black Death.

The river Deben is one of Suffolk’s ancient meandering rivers, carving its way through the landscape like a great scar. 

At one end - Rendlesham and Sutton Hoo, the ancient palace and burial site of the Anglo-Saxon ruler King Readwald.

At the other - the rural settlements of Debenham, Easton, Cretingham, which is where the boys have got permission to strap on their waders and go exploring.

They soon discover that Cretingham reflects the river itself - on the surface, beautiful.

Under the surface - ancient, mysterious and dark…

A bit of a different episode this week. We’re calling it… Only Finds!

George has been honeymooning, Paul's been wandering ancient ruins in Turkey, and so we've not been out in the field. BUT we didn't want to leave you empty handed, so here is something that actually turned out to be a cracking episode - 50 minutes of some of the most memorable finds and moments from the pod so far.
