The river Deben is one of Suffolk’s ancient meandering rivers, carving its way through the landscape like a great scar.
At one end - Rendlesham and Sutton Hoo, the ancient palace and burial site of the Anglo-Saxon ruler King Readwald.
At the other - the rural settlements of Debenham, Easton, Cretingham, which is where the boys have got permission to strap on their waders and go exploring.
They soon discover that Cretingham reflects the river itself - on the surface, beautiful.
Under the surface - ancient, mysterious and dark…

BUT we didn't want to leave you empty handed, so here is something that actually turned out to be a cracking episode - 50 minutes of some of the most memorable finds and moments from the pod so far.
It's got it all: Iron Age Gold, Bronze Age axes, Jacobean silver, Victorian lunchboxes and Napoleon.

Back in one of their favourite quintessential Suffolk villages, the boys discover that behind the chocolate box exterior lurk a whole host of myths, legends and secrets. And there's still one HUGE one to be discovered - a lost Roman villa complex.
Having studied some old maps, Paul thinks he might have found the clue they've been missing that will point them in the right direction, does George agree? And can they find the evidence they need in the tumbling earth and long summer grasses?

After recovering from George’s Londinium send-off (stag do), the boys brave the nettles once again and return to the mysterious site of Combretovium - Suffolk’s mighty Roman fort.
Armed with spades and shears, they follow the river upstream, hacking their way through prickly foliage to investigate a new area with huge promise…

Hidden along a quiet stretch of the River Gipping lies a landscape packed with secrets.
In this episode the boys are granted rare access to explore two historic landmarks of Suffolk’s past: a mysterious medieval mill and one of the country's most important Roman forts - Combretovium.
Battling nettles, mud, and curious farm animals, they push deep into the landscape and get a shock... in more ways than one.

No prizes for guessing where the boys head in this episode. That's right, back to the new ancient settlement they've discovered.
Iron Age gold, Roman silver, mysterious bronze, brooches, coins, pottery - nothing can surprise them from these fields anymore, right?

Back on the field where they found the incredible gold stater last episode, the boys look for further signs of Iron Age occupation. One more coin and it’ll be hoard hunting, not just history hunting…

Spring is in the air, everything is bathed in sunlight and looks a little golden - even that suspicious metal edge in the dark clay...
In this stunning episode George and Paul return to a field that was home to a Roman farm some 2,000 years ago. This time though, the boys scramble through the hedgerow to explore the greener grass on the other side and what they discover rewrites the landscape in the most spectacular way possible.

To celebrate the big 3-0 (episodes, not the number of stones Paul pockets every hunt), the boys return to land where they discovered a stunning silver coin of Severus Alexander in Episode 2.
But a chance meeting with the farmer sends them somewhere new - land next to a medieval church that’s never been detected.
Expect mysterious finds, Suffolk in spring, and George revealing a recent discovery that leaves Paul speechless.

And George and Paul do. Join them as they fire up their classic Land Rover and…
From ancient tracks and forgotten villages to ruined churches, local legends and the history beneath our feet, each episode begins with a place, a story or a legend — and follows the clues wherever they lead. Along the way there are remarkable discoveries, unexpected encounters, old maps, metal detectors, muddy boots, plenty of wrong turns and, more often than not, a pint at the end of the day.
This isn’t history viewed through a dusty museum cabinet. Its history held, unearthed in the landscape it happened.
