Long before the English fens were drained, travellers crossing the marshes after dark spoke of strange glowing lights drifting through the fog.

Known in parts of East Anglia as the Lantern Men, these mysterious lights became part of one of Britain’s oldest and most unsettling pieces of folklore. Some believed they were spirits leading people away from safe paths and deeper into the wetlands. Others blamed marsh gas, reflections, and the dangerous landscape itself.
