What does a second chance actually look like, and what does it take to help someone build one?
On this episode of The Last Shot Podcast, Co-Host Julien Serrano-O’Neil sits down with attorney Alexander J. Smith-Johnson, founder of Smith-Johnson Law PLLC, for a conversation about criminal defense, entrepreneurship, mentorship, and the responsibility that comes with advocating for someone’s future.
From growing up in Harlem to attending Norfolk State University and Florida A&M University College of Law, Alexander reflects on the people and experiences that shaped his path. He shares how an Alpha Phi Alpha oratorical competition helped him recognize his potential as an attorney, how a mentor helped him overcome the cost of LSAT preparation, and what working as an assistant public defender taught him that a classroom could not.
The conversation also explores the uncertainty of starting a law firm, balancing business ownership with accessible representation, and Alexander’s perspective on navigating encounters with law enforcement. He discusses why Black representation in the legal profession matters and how employers, nonprofits, and mentors can create meaningful opportunities for returning citizens.
At the center is a question that changed how he approaches advocacy: What does a second chance look like? Alexander explains why opportunity, accountability, and a concrete plan all belong in that conversation.

What does it take to turn a village's belief in young people into lasting community change?
Sandra Fatmi-Hall returns to The Last Shot Podcast for a personal conversation with Julien Serrano-O'Neil about the experiences, relationships and purpose behind her work. Born in Jamaica and known to many as “Ms. Pine Hills,” the Founder, CEO and Executive Director of the United Foundation of Central Florida reflects on the lessons her grandmother taught her, the people who helped build UFCF, and why investing in young people means supporting the families and communities around them.
Sandra shares how trust developed through the children her organization mentored, why meaningful support reaches beyond office hours, and how a community of volunteers came together to deliver humanitarian relief in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa.
Ahead of her October 17, 2026 TEDxOrlando appearance, she also discusses what it means to carry a grassroots mission onto a larger stage and show young people that their own voices belong there, too.
For Julien, this conversation is personal: Sandra is a mentor, a second mother and a community leader whose influence he has experienced firsthand.
A conversation about service, consistency, cultural roots and building something the next generation can carry forward.

AIRPORT BLVD is traveling far beyond the streets that inspired it.
Following its Tribeca Festival premiere and official selections at the Oak Cliff Film Festival and Houston Cinema Arts Festival, the jazz-infused, black-and-white film continues connecting with audiences through its intimate exploration of place, identity, creativity, and change.
The Last Shot Podcast sits down with lead actor and producer Jamal Gamble to discuss the story behind AIRPORT BLVD and his deeply personal approach to portraying Xavier, an imperfect photographer searching for community and purpose as East Austin transforms around him.
Gamble reflects on filming inside community landmarks that have since been demolished, the quiet realities of displacement, and the responsibility artists carry when telling stories rooted in people's lived experiences. He also discusses the film's original jazz sensibility, the freedom director Alejandro Hendricks created on set, and why shooting in black and white required every performer and crew member to dig deeper.
Gamble also looks ahead to the film's next big push: its screening at the 18th annual Houston Cinema Arts Festival. He shares what's coming as the festival run continues, including plans for a special hometown rollout in Austin.
At its heart, AIRPORT BLVD is both a love letter and an act of remembrance: a soulful portrait of Black creative life and a city evolving faster than some of its communities can hold on.
The conversation asks an urgent question: When a city changes, what gets built, what gets erased, and who is responsible for protecting the places and relationships that matter?
AIRPORT BLVD is written and directed by Alejandro Hendricks and produced by Brannin Webber, Jamal Gamble, and Trai Wade.

What happens when a childhood idea becomes a comic book, a company, and a platform for representation?
On this episode of The Last Shot Podcast, Co-Host Julien Serrano-O’Neil sits down with award-winning writer, cartoonist, public relations professional, entrepreneur, and creator Jaylen Christie for a conversation about creativity, ownership, representation, and turning passion into purpose.
Jaylen takes us inside the story behind Stink Bomb Man and the Brain Kids, characters he first imagined as a child growing up in Tallahassee after realizing how few Black superheroes he saw on screen and on the page. Decades later, those childhood creations became a published comic book and the foundation for his independent company, Superfly Nerd Comic Co.
The conversation explores Jaylen’s decision to retain ownership of his intellectual property, how his background in public relations helped him successfully launch and market the comic, and what he has learned from selling directly to readers, speaking in schools, and participating in the independent comics community.
Jaylen also reflects on appearing as a panelist at San Diego Comic-Con for two consecutive years, his research on representation and social inequality, and why creating diverse characters is central to the universe he is building.
Plus, he gives listeners a look at what’s next, including Thermosphere, the next chapter in the Stink Bomb Man and the Brain Kids universe, the planned six-issue series, and his larger vision for expanding these characters beyond comics.
At its heart, this episode is about betting on your ideas, protecting what you create, and refusing to quit on yourself even when the road from imagination to reality takes years.

The future of queer cinema is “unlimited.”
On this episode of The Last Shot Podcast, powered by Last Shot Media Group, co-hosts Julien Serrano-O’Neil and Zachary Heneden sit down with Eli Morris (they/he), Director of Strategy and Programs for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival, ahead of the festival's 38th edition.
From its beginnings with films projected onto bedsheets in a living room to a festival featuring 87 films across Vancouver, Eli takes us inside the evolution of VQFF and the continued importance of authentic, queer-made storytelling.
We explore the meaning behind the 2026 theme, “A Seat at the Table,” how VQFF is expanding whose voices shape its programming, and why representation must go beyond simply seeing queer and trans people on screen. Eli also discusses the festival's collaborative approach to leadership, the importance of intersectionality in cinema, the Centrepiece Presentation Apolo, and the ideas of care, kinship and collective liberation behind Ecosystems Not Empires.
The conversation also goes deeper into what queer cultural spaces mean at a time of increased visibility alongside political backlash. For Eli, part of the answer lies not only in resistance, but in community, connection and joy.
“There is such political value in cultivating joy and celebration, even in really challenging, tough times where it feels hopeless.” — Eli Morris
Ultimately, this is a conversation about more than a film festival. It's about who gets to tell stories, who gets a seat at the table, and what becomes possible when communities are empowered to see themselves fully represented on screen.

On this episode of The Last Shot Podcast, we sit down with writer/director/star Britt Bankhead and actress/co-producer Grace Patterson to talk about THE TOWN THAT TAKES — a supernatural horror thriller inspired by one of America's most enduring unsolved mysteries: the disappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, and the single haunting word left behind — CROATOAN.
Britt and Grace break down how they turned centuries of American folklore — Skinwalker and Wendigo mythology — and Southern Gothic atmosphere into one of the standout indie horror releases of the summer, why practical effects still matter to them, and what it's like building a film (and a life) together as creative partners.
THE TOWN THAT TAKES, from Atlas Distribution, is now playing in select theaters across the top 20 North American markets.

What happens when the line between competitive drive and psychological trauma is completely erased? In this special Tribeca Festival edition of the Last Shot Podcast, co-hosts Zachary Heneden and Julien Serrano-O'Neil sit down with visionary writer and director Ran Ran Wang to dissect her gripping new psychological sports thriller, I Think About Killing You.
Fresh off its New York Premiere in Tribeca’s fiercely curated "Shorts: Competitive Edge" block, this 14-minute masterclass in tension follows Dani (Tiana Le), the captain of a Division One collegiate rowing team, who is plagued by uninvited, invasive fantasies of killing her deeply abusive coach (Bridget Regan).
In this packed, rapid-fire 20-question interview, Ran Ran Wang opens up about exploring the dark, taboo intersections of elite athletics and internal trauma, how she built a claustrophobic aesthetic on the waters of Long Beach, and why it was crucial to validate the raw, vengeful rage that systemic institutional abuse creates in young female athletes.
Tune in to hear how she subverted the classic sports drama into an anxiety-inducing thriller supported by Rideback RISE and Echobend.
