On this week's show, Dan and Ben had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Ian Richards. Ian is a race walker, ex Olympian, multiple Masters champion and most recently, nominee for World Masters Athletics Athlete of the decade. 

Ian shared with us his journey from being "useless at sport" and achieving a wheelbarrow race certificate, to competing in a politically tense 1980 Moscow Olympics. What it means to not only be a competing Olympian, but also a retired Olympian - "Once and Olympian, always an Olympian". After spending some time working with young people and inspiring many on their sporting journeys along the way, Ian got the bug back. Ticking off his bucket list items, a 100 mile race walk in under 24 hours and the Marathon Des Sables, he then, at the age of 60 took up Masters competitions (including 10 Masters world championships and 6 Masters world records). The rest writes itself.

Ian is now 73 and wondering what research and modern sport science can give him, to keep competing at the very top of his sport. 

This show comes with a warning, you will be irreversibly inspired and motivated, be prepared for discovering something within you that you didn't know existed.

We dive in to (amongst other things) the role of role models, representation in sport, grassroots sport & safe spaces, community engagement and accessible motorsport education. 

Andrew is a retired professional footballer and Operations Director at Tactic Connect, Gen is Director of the Centre for Research in Sports, Technology and the Law (CRISTAL) at DMU and CEO of Tactic Connect, Gen is also Chair of the UK Sports Association and Vice-Chair at the British Association of Sport and Law (BASL).
