The Magpies lost at home for the first time since January as Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made a string of saves at St. James' Park.

The Netherlands number one denied Newcastle time and time again, either side of a 35th-minute goal from Danny Welbeck - who was sadly stretchered off in the second period. It was the Magpies' first defeat on Tyneside since champions Manchester City edged them out in a 3-2 thriller at the beginning of the year, but Eddie Howe's men largely dominated proceedings without being able to find a way past Verbruggen.

Anthony Gordon saw a first half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford as Newcastle United were held to a goalless draw at Everton on Saturday night. James Tarkowski's foul on Sandro Tonali handed England winger Gordon the chance to score against his former club on Merseyside, but his international teammate was equal to it, saving low to his left. That meant that Eddie Howe's side had to settle for a point in the end on their final trip to Goodison Park, after a hard-fought encounter with Sean Dyche's men.

Newcastle United progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup - and set up a home tie against Chelsea - with a narrow win over AFC Wimbledon at St. James' Park. The League Two side made life difficult for the much-changed Magpies in a fixture which was switched to Tyneside with the Wombles' pitch was unplayable following torrential rain last week. The floodgates never quite opened here but Fabian Schär's penalty was enough to send United through, with the Magpies dominating possession but neither side creating much in the way of clear-cut chances. Anthony Gordon's second goal of the season earned Newcastle United a 1-1 draw with Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Gordon stepped up to send Ederson the wrong way from the spot just before the hour after being felled by the Brazilian goalkeeper, cancelling out Joško Gvardiol's first half opener at St. James' Park in an entertaining encounter. Gordon's leveller means Eddie Howe's side have now scored in their last 22 top flight outings at home - an impressive run stretching back to the 2022/23 season.

Newcastle United climbed to third in the fledgling Premier League table as they maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Meetings between the two sides in the Black Country have more often than not seen the spoils shared in recent years, and this one looked to be heading for another draw. Eddie Howe's side fell behind in the first half when a swift Wolves counter-attack ended in Mario Lemina sweeping home but Fabian Schär levelled in the second period with a trademark strike from range. But with just ten minutes remaining, substitute Harvey Barnes turned the game on its head with a stunning goal worthy of winning any match.

Newcastle United progressed into the Carabao Cup third round after a penalty shoot-out victory against Nottingham Forest following a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night. Joe Willock, making his first competitive start for United since April, opened the scoring within 19 seconds at the City Ground, the club's fastest ever goal in the competition, before the midfielder was forced off in the early stages of the cup tie due to injury. Newcastle found themselves on level terms shortly after the restart following Jota Silva's thumping strike before the contest was settled by a penalty shoot-out and, despite Joelinton being denied from the spot by Carlos Miguel, Ibrahim Sangaré and Taiwo Awoniyi both missed for the hosts before Sean Longstaff stroked home the winning spot-kick after successful conversions from Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Gordon.

Lee discusses the game and the lack of transfers in the transfer window in this episode. Anthony Gordon’s 76th-minute equaliser rescued a point for Newcastle United at Bournemouth on Sunday. Marcus Tavernier – brother of former Newcastle full back James – tapped home to give the hosts a first half lead at the Vitality Stadium. But Gordon’s intervention levelled matters in the closing stages for the Magpies, who were good value for their point after an improved second half display – while they also survived a late scare as Dango Outtara’s goal was ruled out after a VAR check.
