  • Whose Eye Was It? The Fight Over Napalm Girl's Credit
For more than fifty years, 'The Terror of War', the photograph of nine-year-old Kim Phuc running from a napalm strike on 8 June 1972, has carried Nick Ut's name. Then the documentary 'The Stringer' said a local stringer, Nguyen Thanh Nghe, took it. World Press Photo suspended Ut's credit. AP kept it. A 3D reconstruction, an analysis of the negative and a pile of conflicting witness accounts each pointed somewhere different. In March 2026 Ut took the film's makers to a defamation court in France.
Wren and Theo go back to the Saigon bureau, where stringers were paid per picture and nobody wrote down their names, and ask what a credit line ever recorded. It turns out each institution in this fight is answering a different question. Note: our sources do not report what happened at or after the 15 May 2026 hearing in Tarascon, and this episode describes no ruling.

  • The Kodak Fiends Are Back
In the late 1880s a new kind of pocket camera set off a panic: strangers photographed on beaches and promenades, sometimes with lenses disguised as buttons. That panic helped give us the legal idea of privacy. It never gave us a right not to be photographed. In autumn 2026, with hundreds of Dutch women and girls filmed in secret with Meta glasses, retailers pulling stock and Norway proposing a ban, the main protection for bystanders is a small LED. Hamburg's data regulator took it outside and tested it.
Wren and Theo follow the line from Abigail Roberson's face on twenty-five thousand flour posters to a light that dims, or stays dark, when the glasses' AI looks at the world. They also hear from the blind and low-vision people who call these glasses life-changing and fear being shut out by bans. Meta's explanation for the LED behaviour during AI queries was not in our research.

  • One Gram of Silver
In January 2026 silver passed a hundred and twenty dollars an ounce. A few weeks later Kodak Alaris raised film prices by up to thirty-nine percent and named silver as a reason. It sounded like 1980, when the Hunt brothers tried to corner silver and the New York Times reported that photo prices were rising with it. Then Ilford's maker, Harman, raised its US prices too, and said the cause was tariffs, not silver. Wren and Theo try to work out which story is true.
Along the way: how photography once bought about a quarter of the world's silver, why every colour photo you own was made with silver and kept none of it, the recycling business that hospitals and minilabs ran out of sight, and how Kodak got through the 1980 squeeze. Then the arithmetic, which points away from the metal and toward a few old coating lines and a fragile chemical supply chain that the film revival depends on.

  • Certified Real: What a Signed Photo Can't Prove
In September 2026 Apple introduced Reference Image for the iPhone 18 Pro, a camera mode built to prove that a photo came from a real sensor and not from AI. It is the most ambitious attempt yet to give ordinary people a 'this is real' seal. A year earlier, a hobbyist on a camera forum got a flagship authenticity camera, Nikon's Z6III, to sign images it never captured. Wren and Theo follow the seal from the sensor to Apple's cloud darkroom to your Instagram feed, and look at what it actually proves.
The trail runs back to 1869, when the spirit photographer William Mumler walked free because nobody could prove exactly how he faked his ghosts. It runs forward to a proposed federal evidence rule, and to photographers whose true pictures were doubted anyway. The question is no longer only whether fakes can be caught. It is who has to prove a picture is real, and what happens to the people who can't.

Every photograph hides a second story: how it was made, who it changed, and what it can no longer prove. Two curious hosts follow one image, one idea or one argument from the world of photography each…
