My research combines behavioral and analytical sciences to help resolve complex issues. I particularly focus on leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and analytics to improve outcomes, enhance productivity and lower costs in various fields. Current areas of interests are 1) cybersecurity and data falsification in 2) healthcare information system design, and 3) artificial intelligence and algorithmic fairness.
Through collaboration with the Office of Veterans Affairs, I have been involved in several HSR&D and NIH studies totaling about $5 million in overall funding. Recent funded work looks at: 1) detecting empathy in provider secure messages, 2) improving the traditional Natural Language Processing system to identify pain care quality indicators in clinical notes, and 3) automating the documentation of clinical notes. I have accumulated a strong record of achievements in terms of research publications and partnerships that impact the fields of healthcare and information systems.
I have publications at leading journals in the field including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research (ISR), and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA). I am passionate about analytics and programming and enjoy passing along the power of AI and analytics to future generations of data scientists.
Moving forward, I would like to continue impactful research applying the latest AI algorithms to help stakeholders in the healthcare field. Whether it is reducing costs for patients, reducing provider burnout, or enhancing healthcare outcomes, there is a tremendous potential for AI in the healthcare field. And I feel that is our duty to bring turn this potential into tangible solutions.

NightCap was invented in early 2019 by then 16-year-old Shirah Benarde from West Palm Beach, Florida. The idea came to her in a dream after hearing about the horrors of drink spiking from friends who experienced it after going off to college. Fortunately, her friends were okay, but Shirah was determined to come up with a pragmatic solution to this problem to protect her and her friends when they went off to college. She also wanted to make sure the product would be something girls would feel comfortable using. The next morning, she went to her mother’s closet, grabbed a pair of pantyhose, cut them up, and attached them to a scrunchie to create the first NightCap prototype.
Her brother, Michael, 21 at the time, came home from college for the summer and saw the prototype sitting on a table. As someone who had been living on a college campus for four years, he understood how prevalent this problem was — and is. Knowing that there was no product on the market that had been adopted at scale, Michael saw huge potential for NightCap due to its unbeatable convenience and reusability. Together, Michael and Shirah took action and spent the next six months working to bring NightCap from concept to reality.

Maxwell Cohen has just stepped into the Shark Tank. Max has traveled from New York City to find an investment of $100,000 in exchange for 20% equity in his business, Afresheet (“A fresh sheet,” get it?). With Maxwell has come Lydia, and as Max explains, Lydia is a very busy woman. She’s a full time college student and has a part-time job in the evening, so who has time to wash their sheets? Beds are used for more than just sleeping; they are used as a desk, a hangout spot, and even as a dining room table. Pretty much everything happens on a bed. Luckily for Lydia, she sleeps on Afresheet.
Afresheet is the world’s first custom-fitted bedsheet with disposable, peelable top layers. When you soil your bed, and Lydia spills some of her cheetos to demonstrate, simply peel off that top layer, and instantly reveal the brand new layer underneath of it. For the mess, just toss it in the recycling bin! If there is another mess, do not panic – Afresheet has 7 disposable, peelable top layers. There are so many different uses for Afresheet, so moms, don’t send your kids off to college with hopes that one day they might eventually wash their sheets.
Friends coming to visit? Loan them Afresheet! Toddler isn’t feeling well? Use Afresheet! Maxwell explains that he started the company in business and poured a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the business, but fortunately for him, he sleeps on Afresheet and can peel it away and sleep well at night.
Robert Yonover pitched See Rescue Streamer during Shark Tank Season 8 and sought $200,000 for 20% equity. Unfortunately, as you’ll soon find out in our See Rescue Streamer update, Robert wasn’t able to reel in a shark despite his excellent presentation. So, how’s his company doing now?
Robert’s product, See Rescue Streamer, is a rescue signal device that anyone can use on any terrain at any time. If you’re lost or stranded, you can use the See Rescue Streamer to highlight your location. It allows you to “stand out against your surroundings,” so rescue teams can find you. It comes in two different sizes and is approved and used by the United States military.
The sharks were impressed with both the presentation and the product. They were even more amazed when Robert revealed that he’d already done millions in sales. He planned to use the investment to secure more military contracts. He also wanted to expand consumer and retail sales. Despite impressing the sharks, Robert wasn’t able to get anyone to take a bite.
Daymond John was the first to bow out because he believed that he couldn’t help Yonover with the product. Meanwhile, Lori Greiner didn’t think that the See Rescue Streamer was a mass consumer product. She went out, too.
As for Robert Herjavec, he explained that the product posed several problems on the consumer side, so he went out. Mark Cuban expressed similar concerns and went out, followed by Kevin O’Leary.
The good news is that it appears that not getting a deal on Shark Tank didn’t hurt the business at all. While researching for our See Rescue Streamer update, we found out that Robert still benefited from a huge surge in sales following his appearance on the show.
On top of this, the product was on board 2020’s SpaceX flight to the International Space Station. The company is still going strong, supplying military customers across the world, with an estimated annual revenue of somewhere around $3.9 million. So, as you can see by our See Rescue Streamer update, not every entrepreneur needs to get a deal to be successful.
