  • GBGBS2e12- Design and Create Your Idea; Jason Allen Talks About How Pillar Design Helped Design and Create The Seattle Access Rapid Tool
    Jason

Jason Allen founded Ignition USA in 2017 when he began work on a new tool design for the fire service. After decades of using the same tools and following the same procedures, Jason realized that there could be better  ways to handle a lot of the situations that first responders face. With that, the iconic KeyBlade design was born. Later, it was incorporated into what is now known as the Seattle Rapid Access Tool.

The idea for the KeyBlade came after years of carrying a customized tool made from modified framing square with a removable handle for passive entry on low acuity aid calls. After repeated requests from crewmembers to mass produce the tool, he began the blueprints for the first Seattle Rapid Access Tool design. Over time and with the input of his crew and fellow first responders from across the nation, the tool design was changed and modified to make it as efficient and effective as possible.

Jason grew up in the fire service, always knowing that was his passion, he followed it diligently and began volunteering with his local department at the age of 16. At only 18 years old he was hired full time with the fire department and has been in the field ever since. Jason has worked as a firefighter, apparatus operator, paramedic, officer, and engine boss on a wildland strike team. To help fund his education in his career field, Jason has also worked as a foreman for a commercial construction company, a commercial logger, concrete finisher, and security patrol officer, which has afforded him with the knowledge and expertise to create tool designs that allow passive entry into buildings. With the ability to look outside the box for better ways to make the job safer and more efficient, our company stands to push for innovative solutions to everyday problems. Since 2014 Jason has worked with the Seattle Fire Department and is now on one of the city’s busiest ladder companies.

It is the mission of Ignition USA to bring the traditions and heritage of the fire service into modern day and strive to promote the brotherhood, comradery, and fellowship that the department has ways been known for, while inventing new tools to make the job safer and efforts more precise and effective. We are excited about where this company is heading, and we have many new ideas and patents in the works that we are hoping will further revolutionize the industry. You can stay up-to-date on what we’re working on by following us on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook.

  • ILPS4e25- Create a Successful Business and Then Give Back; Give Back Box Founder Monika Wiela Discusses Creating a Successful Company and Using Her Experience to Create a Way to Give Back

Give Back Box® was founded in 2012 by Monika Wiela, who at the time was running an online shoe store. The idea was inspired by a homeless man she encountered in Chicago, who was holding up a sign saying he needed a pair of shoes. Wiela returned later that day with shoes for him, but he was gone. She spent that night thinking about what she could do with all the empty boxes in her warehouse and also help people like that man, and a new social enterprise was born. As Wiela researched further, she learned that, an estimated 11 million tons of clothing, footwear, towels, bedding, drapery, and other textiles end up in U.S. landfills every year. In addition, online shopping is now the preferred method for much of the buying public. Corrugated boxes are the dominant packaging method for e-commerce. With this knowledge, Wiela’s mission crystalized. If online retailers would use Give Back Box, shipping boxes and other items could be used a second time prior to being recycled. The impact would be remarkable.

Wiela’s first step to bring her dream to reality was to find a nonprofit with a national footprint that could accept donations on a grand scale. The organization would have to be able to not only accept used clothing but other items that people wanted to donate. The nonprofit enterprise also needed to have a program to recycle the boxes that it would receive, further limiting landfill waste.

The first major retailer to join Give Back Box was Newegg.com. The retailer placed Give Back Box fliers in all the boxes shipped to its customers. The flier recommended that customers re-use the boxes their purchases came in and fill them with clothes, accessories and household items, then ship them to local charities using pre-paid shipping labels. The local charities developed a system to track the packages, so when they received the boxes and scanned them in, tax receipts were generated for appropriate donors.

Give Back Box® has also teamed up with some of the biggest retailers in the U.S., including Overstock, Amazon, Loft, REI, Levi’s, Asics, Ann Taylor, Uncommongoods, Nordstrom, Viva Terra, Ecru, Bonobos, Scrubs & Beyond, eBags, Lou & Grey and many others.

The Give Back Box platform is open for any retailer who joins as a partner. It is open for donors as well, with the option to chose charity. The charities stocks their shelves with the donations, and the revenues help fund its mission of helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work. The charities also recycle every box that arrives at their facilities.

Give Back Box has truly created a new method of waste diversion for retailers because, in addition to creating a secondary use for the shipping box and guaranteeing that it will be recycled, it helps clear closets, create jobs and offer more companies and their customers an opportunity to recycle.

Kevin Mako is the Founder and President of MAKO Design + Invent, a 25-person invention development firm with offices in Toronto, Austin, and the UK. His entrepreneurial spirit was ignited during his early teenage years when he started several ultra-small businesses that built a wealth of knowledge and experience for his eventual life passion, MAKO Design + Invent. While attending one of the top business schools in North America, the Richard Ivey School of Business, Kevin incorporated MAKO in his third year at just 22 years old. Graduating as Section Class President with an additional specialization in Entrepreneurship, Kevin continued his education at the University of Hong Kong studying manufacturing and supply chain management.

MAKO Design + Invent was the first firm in North America to offer full-service professional physical consumer product development services to start-ups, and is now the largest firm in the industry in both Canada and Texas. The company provides home inventors and product developers with end-to-end consumer product development services that turn invention ideas into successful businesses. MAKO is tremendously proud to be completely grassroots and organically built with zero financing, debt, or investors. While most of Kevin’s time is spent growing the firm, Kevin also spends a great deal of time progressing the product development industry as a whole through guest speaking engagements, building robust strategic partnerships, and advancing the development of entrepreneurship through initiatives such as The Industrial Design Guild, Inventors Meetups, and the MAKO Student Innovation Awards at Ryerson.

His budding partnership with Shark Tank’s Robert Herjevac and Avenger’s Colbie Smulders started with Frito-Lay’s Dreamvention competition. This is a competition where families across North America enter an invention idea to win their invention idea being brought to life and a whopping grand prize of $250,000. Thanks to Kevin and MAKO Design, MAKO has changed the lives of young inventors and their families two years in a row and counting!

During his spare time, Kevin enjoys playing competitive squash and hockey year-round. During the summer months, Kevin spends his weekends exploring the outdoors. As someone with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Kevin actively learns something new every few months which has included playing a variety of instruments, flying planes, and studying philosophy.
