On this bonus episode of the Law Enforcement Social Media Podcast and COPS on Blab, we talk about a new format to the show and banter through the whole episode.
We are sure you will enjoy this show.
On this episode of the Law Enforcement Social Media Podcast and COPS on Blab we talk about Safetrek the app with Rob Roderick the co-founder of the app.
Safetrek
SafeTrek is a mobile personal safety app that bridges the gap between doing nothing and calling 911 in an unsafe situation. SafeTrek allows you to proactively protect yourself without the heavy commitment of calling 911.
The way SafeTrek works is simple - If you are feeling unsafe, simply launch the app and hold your thumb down on the safe button. When you are safe, release your thumb and type in your 4 digit pin number. If the situation turns for the worse and you need help, simply release your thumb and do not type in your pin - your local police will be notified of your location, name, and emergency.
SafeTrek was developed by college students, for college students. After constantly receiving crime report emails and hearing stories from our friends about incidents that were occurring on campus, we decided to tackle the problem that the campus blue light system was failing to solve.
SafeTrek works anywhere in the US and is available on both iOS and Android.
Click here to read articles on the app.

He later transferred to City Wide Youth Programs Division where his duties were to provide self-esteem, motivation, leadership, and job search workshops for both youth and adults throughout the city of San Jose. He was later promoted to Teen Activist for Community Change and Leadership Education (TACCLE) Coordinator for the city of San Jose. Over the past twenty (20) plus years Sherman has worked as a counselor for Court Dependent Abuse/Abandon children. In the course of his duties, he has had the opportunity to work with a variety of denominations in the Church Community, also a variety of Civic, Non-Profit, and Profit Organizations.
The serious crime of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) and the need for Pastors (especially Pastors with a background in Christian Counseling) to get involved was first brought to Sherman's attention by his wife Alisha after she had attended a Riverside County CSEC Training. He than started going to CSEC Training classes and received a CSEC Trainers Certificate from the County of Los Angeles. During this time, Sherman also saw a void in educating communities concerning the "Human Slavery of Children." As a result Sherman founded Team New Birth. One of the major recruiting tools that CSEC exploiters use to recruit their victims is the youth themselves! Sherman believes that the youth could also be used conversely as a weapon to help combat the sexual exploitation of children as well. Team New Birth is the CSEC Education and Prevention Division of Ferree's Group Homes Inc. Ferree's Group Homes is a non-profit organization that has been providing housing, therapy and counseling for court dependent abused, Abandoned, and youth on Probation for over 25 years. Ferree's Group Homes have served youth from Riverside County, San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County. Also Ferree's Group Homes has a history of buying, selling, renting homes to moderate and low Income families.
Sherman has over 20 years of experience working with and developing programs for at risk youth, he knows that God made eradicating Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children a Mission for him. Sherman's was quoted as stating, "Our Soul Belongs to God and It Is Not For Sale!"

At the ranch, Mitch’s parents entertained guest from around the globe which included Walt Disney, John Wayne, 60 Minutes commentator, Morley Safer, and tennis stars Poncho Gonzales and Rod Laver.
Mitch’s family was active in promoting tourism in Arizona. His mother was featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine and his father served the community by being involved with numerous local and national organizations such as Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and most of the major Travel Associations.
Mitch grew up riding horses, hunting and fishing. In high school, his interest gravitated to motocross, scuba diving in the Sea of Cortez, playing football, baseball and competing as a ranked Arizona tennis player throughout Arizona and California.
After high school, Mitch attended the University of Arizona and studied civil engineering for two years. His internal passion for business and marketing eventually led to Mitch transferring over to the business school and graduating with a degree in business administration. During college, Mitch paid the bills by waiting tables and tending bar at the ranch. On the weekends, he earned his expert hang gliding pilot rating and spent most of his time flying high above most of the mountains in Southern Arizona.
After graduating in 1980, Mitch took a front desk management position at Caesars in Lake Tahoe, California. After meeting and getting to know several local lawyers on the ski slopes, Mitch’s interest began to change and soon law school became his calling.
Mitch attended and put himself through Western State School of Law and during this time, he clerked for many different lawyers and firms. He found his calling and passion when he started working as a law clerk for a personal injury lawyer. It was then that Mitch knew that he wanted to use the law to help and protect injured consumers and their families for the remainder of his legal career.
Professional
Mitch was admitted to the California Bar in 1986 and immediately opened up his own practice representing victims of personal injury and wrongful death. As mentioned above, Mitch and Lisa combined forces in 1988 and since then, have never looked back. Twenty seven years later they have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of people and their families.
In 2009 Mitch was named an Orange County “Trial Lawyer of the Year” by the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association. In 2011, Mitch was again nominated for OCTLA “Trial Lawyer of the Year” and also nominated for the Consumer Attorneys of California for the “CAOC Street Fighter of the Year” award.
In 2013 Mitch received the California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year (CLAY) Award for litigation. According to California Lawyer Magazine, the CLAY Award recognizes attorneys who have changed the law, substantially influenced public policy or the profession, or achieved a remarkable victory for a client or for the public and have made a profound impact on the law.
Mitch’s firm is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers, an exclusive listing reserved for less than 5% of all distinguished law practices in the United States. Several earlier recognitions include Mitch being named as a “Southern California Super Lawyer” and an ability rating of 10.0 or Superb by the AVVO lawyer rating system.
Mitch enjoys helping people and that’s why he became a trial lawyer. Over the past 26+ years, he has obtained numerous multimillion dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients. He is also a multiple time member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum (membership limited to those attorneys having obtained million dollar plus verdicts and settlements). In his spare time, he has served as a Judge Pro Tem, and arbitrator with the Orange County Superior Court and attorneys fee mediator with the Orange County Bar Association.
When not trying cases, Mitch enjoys sharing trial practice tips and ethics with younger lawyers across the U.S. He is active with the local and national legal community including the Orange County Bar Association, Orange County Trial Lawyers Association, Consumer Attorneys of California, American Bar Association, American Association for Justice, and National Trial Lawyers Association. His video blog trial tips site is popular among trial lawyers and he invites you to connect with him on social media via http://www.About.me/MitchJackson Subscribe to the show on iTunes and leave us a comment. When this show is released, the Super Bowl will have came and went and the Denver Broncos will have been crowned the winners, the content provided in this show will help you with any other type of large event. So make sure you listen all the way through.
We were joined by Captain Jeff Hunter of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Cpt. Hunter stated that Santa Clara is the smallest agency to host a Super Bowl with only 143 people. As a result, Sunnyvale was asked to help with the logistics of the event and the joint operations center. They began planning for this event 2 years ago. There were a total of 85 agencies represented, of those about 15-20 from each agency participated in the planning. On game day, there was 30-40 all the way down from San Jose To San Francisco. As part of the planing, they enlisted the help of Nixle.
Brian Yim of Nixle joined the show to talked to us regarding their involvement in the Super Bowl. Nixle is a notification platform that joins public safety with the community they serve. Nixle provided the technology that Cpt. Hunter used to communicate with the community regarding the Superbowl. Subscribing to Nixle was easy, all anyone had to do was open a text message and type 888-777 in the phone number section and in the message users simply had to type "SB50" which stands for "Super Bowl 50" and with that, users received notifications from Cpt. Hunter and his team regarding the event. The great thing about Nixle, is that you don't even have to be in the area to subscribe. You can subscribe from anywhere to get updates regarding the Superbowl. This was great for all attending the event that weren't from the area.
Anyone can sign up for Nixle as long as you have an email address or can receive text messages on your phone.
After speaking with law enforcement officials from Arizona who hosted the Super Bowl last year, the decision was made to create a separate Twitter account so not to constantly inundate their local followers with unnecessary information. In Arizona, they had this issue and lost a lot of their followers during the event. Communication for the vent through social media was done so only with Nixle and Twitter. They decided to use the Twitter handle of @SCSB50 "Santa Clara Suber Bowl 50.". They communicated with people from as far out as the UK.
Working with the media and the NFL was seamless as well.
